Is It Legal To Reset Car Mileage?
As Mark pointed out it was on a car that had been reset. I said it ALSO resets on the BMW app which further confirms this is not a simple fix for me.
We have a system called HPI check in the UK which checks for mileage discrepancies from previous services and MOTs. This will be marked at my next MOT. If I take it to BMW on the 7th and they feel that I did it or that it was done on purpose, they will report me to the NMR (National Mileage) to re-register the car. This means that it will always be marked when an HPI inspection is carried out on the vehicle.
As far as I “know” there are many ways to clock the car, unfortunately, it gives you a dot on the dash to say it has been tampered with, there are ways around it, but they are all wrong, OP asks a question . So I suggest not to do that. It is possible, yes this car is a walking computer, a quick google shows no other people who have experienced it or complained about it.
BMW will charge you for the car as an out of warranty car….. (ie you didn’t say the year), so yes they are, unless you have an extended warranty. Why don’t they.

I think that the BMW tool can reset your millage to what it should read, to avoid penalties.

There is no reason to believe that the OP had any role in resetting his car’s apparent mileage. Furthermore, you have absolutely no basis to say that BMW will charge him for any repairs necessary to restore the correct mileage. On the other hand, I think BMW would be very interested in understanding what led to this reset and want to make sure it never happens to another car.
If the dealer is completely unwilling to find and fix the problem free of charge, I recommend that the OP contact BMW head office in the UK immediately and open a case to get immediate attention. He should refuse to pay for any “diagnostics” that the dealer deems necessary to understand the issue.
Also, I suggest that the OP DO NOT take action on his own in an effort to restore the odometer reading.

I generally feel like the app doesn’t always update “always”, especially when the car is just sitting there. I don’t mean for mileage updates specifically, just for all status values. Sometimes I had to do some actions, like performing the “flashlight” app function, to wake up the car and get it to update the feedback app. In your case, I think the app is still getting regular (incorrect) mileage updates from the car that match the current (incorrect) odometer.
This happened to me on my 1997 Mercedes C230 years ago. Left the car at the airport for 3 weeks, came back with a completely dead battery. Changed battery because it wouldn’t start and then ODO read 0. Mercedes covered it from 100% warranty. The mileage on the car is 50K. It should be left alone.
Maybe we should go back to mechanical things that can’t be hacked, tied up in millions of lines of code, and that’s before compilers/interpreters get involved, and for “apps” the world goes crazy.
