In a traditional dual battery setup, there is a device called a battery isolator, which allows your car’s alternator to charge the battery as well.

Solar generators aim to provide an all-in-one off-grid power solution for campers. It usually includes a battery, solar charge controller and inverter, all in a compact and easy-to-use device.

It comes in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your camping needs, and offers a lithium-ion battery option that greatly reduces weight and size. Lithium-ion batteries also have higher capacity utilization, around 80-95% (compared to the 50% utilization of other batteries we’ve discussed in traditional dual battery setups).

However, with so many solar generator options, and new manufacturers and models available, it can be difficult to know what to look for. And choosing which model is best to use in a dual battery system is very difficult.

When considering the best solar generator model for our dual battery setup, we can rule out most of the above considerations.

2022 Update: The technology is constantly evolving and has changed a lot since we first invested in a dual solar generator battery system a few years ago. Currently, the three models below (in order of cost) are the best solar generators to integrate into a dual battery system.

Faster car charging (300-750 watts) and compatible with the 1000x and 1500x recommended below. Although it has a high additional cost.

Why Do Hybrid Vehicles Have Two Batteries?

We took the time to install a dedicated 15 amp 12v DC charger for the solar generator directly from the starter car battery using the factory car charger, 20 series fuse amp, 10 gauge / neg position. A relay wire and switch that only “turns on” the DC charger for the equipment while the truck is running.

But you can plug a solar generator car charger into your car’s 12v outlet and have two batteries ready instantly!

We also used a 100 watt solar panel to keep everything running while deployed. This often offsets the refrigerator’s power consumption when off the grid for long periods of time, helping us live longer without having to get into the truck to recharge the solar generator.
