The Hasselback potato is named after the Swedish restaurant where it was invented and popularized. The name of the restaurant was Hasselbacken and these potatoes were first served there in 1953.

The additional step of soaking peeled, washed and cut potatoes in cold water removes excess potato starch from the exterior. This will help the potatoes crisp up when you cook or roast them. Soaking potatoes in cold water also prevents them from turning brown quickly during cooking.

Red potatoes are ideal for frying and will brown beautifully in your air fryer. My second favorite potato for this is the Yukon Gold Medal.

To get the crispiness back, simply place leftover fries in a single layer in the fryer. Turn the air fryer on to 350°F and cook for about 3-4 minutes, depending on how crispy you want it.

Make in batches – I don’t know about you, but I love to eat my potatoes and fries hot and crispy right out of the fryer. Since air fryer baskets usually aren’t very large, I find it helpful to cook in batches when cooking a lot of potatoes in the air fryer. This way we can eat the first round straight from the fryer and then add more fries to the fryer which will be ready in a matter of seconds.

Simple Ingredients – These air fryer fries are not only easy to make, they are also easy to prepare. No fancy ingredients – just potatoes, olive oil and simple spices you’ll probably have in your spice drawer.

The deep fryer is a small kitchen appliance that you buy and plug into an outlet. It stays on your counter while you cook. It “fries” the food with circulating heat instead of hot oil.

The rotating hot air causes what is called the Maillard reaction, which is a chemical reaction that occurs when amino acids and sugar (found in potatoes/vegetables/etc.) are released by heat. This version results in a crispy, crunchy exterior to the food in your fryer.

Quick Air Fryer Roast Potatoes

Traditional frying is not good for us. All these fats and oils can cause heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes when consumed regularly.

However, when you “fry” food in a deep fryer, you still get the crisp, crunchy exterior you get when frying food in oil, but with much less fat and calories.

So yes, cooking food in a deep fryer is healthier than immersing it in hot oil. Win, win!

If your potatoes are thinly cut then it will take less time. The thicker it is the longer it will take you. If you’re not sure they’re cooked, stick a knife or fork in the middle of one. If everything goes well then the matter is over.

Almost never, I don’t think the extra steps and preparation time is worth it. But some people like to cook them a little before air frying them. To do this, first cut the potatoes into slices, then put them in a pot of boiling salted water. Cook them for just a few minutes, until they are half cooked.

Then carefully remove them from the boiling water using a slotted spoon onto absorbent paper or a tea towel. Allow to cool slightly and dry.
