I met with an electrician over the weekend and learned a few things about our hybrid battery. I want to share what I’ve learned and what you can do to help keep your battery in good shape.

Tech: How Long Do Hybrid Batteries Last

If you’ve never seen a hybrid battery before, you’re in for a treat. It is a complex network of nuts, bolts, wires and terminals.

With NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), the terminals drop at the connection and cause corrosion, or as I like to call it, electrical barriers.

Soil erosion is a natural process that causes problems for us in many ways. With a hybrid battery, it will act as a resistor and prevent the flow of electrons. If the corrosion is significant enough, it can set fault codes and cause premature failure of NiMH batteries.

If you’re still using the tried and true NiMH battery, chances are you’ll need these tips. After working with my electrician over the weekend, I learned a thing or two about how rust works.

On the bus bar, it extends to where the copper goes. In some cases (ie, high humidity or rainy areas), you can see an increase in corrosion on the bus bars and also through the main cable breaker.

Moisture in the air promotes electrolysis and can cause rapid corrosion if not properly monitored. If the battery module starts to drop, the electrolyte process cannot stop without replacing the old output module with a new good one.

Periodically disconnecting the battery and cleaning all the bars will allow your module to flow electrons better and keep your battery running longer. It will eventually die even without constant maintenance such as recovery.

If your battery is leaking a lot of electrolyte, it may be time to repair the battery before it’s too late and you get a problem record. Putting aside the battery is a serious weekend job, but it pays to keep the gas stop to a minimum.

A friend of mine helped me understand how corrosion can build up through the copper service plug circuit and cause unwanted resistance.

The answer to this is simple. Clean the corrosion and pour a sufficient amount of solder on the terminal end. The new connection will help reduce unwanted resistance caused by corrosion and help your hybrid battery perform better.

Bars and cables should be cleaned regularly, but due to the hardness of the compound and the risk of shock, not many people do this.

If you want to check and have time, I recommend that you “tune” your battery to keep it in working order.

There are endless videos on YouTube showing you what they do and how you too can repair your Prius Hybrid battery.

If you don’t want to have your car towed and try to fix it yourself, we understand. Most jobs are best left to those who have the tools, time and experience to do them right and fast. Fortunately, there is a growing number of stores that will do the job. We can list them for you, but unfortunately, this list is quickly exhausted and inaccurate. Again, we don’t know the stores or how they were determined.

Instead, we encourage owners to try the Prius Owners Group on Facebook. This group has several members who have repaired batteries and there may be one in your area. Like the Len Mark store in Orange County, California. Or Fun Street Auto in Norwood Mass. You can check their reviews on Google and maybe ask FB club members what they did with the Prius hybrid battery repair. Another option is to buy a refurbished battery.
