Of course, you can have a big generator and worry about turning it on, or you can choose more creative ways to go about it until the power comes back on. I love tinkering with solar energy, so this project brings together a lot of different interests. Recycling, solar energy, renewables, off-the-grid, and emergency preparedness all rolled into one package that I can really enjoy year-round.

People sometimes forget that the humble golf cart charges well with solar energy and can act as a powerful battery during a power outage. Sure, you can spend thousands on a golf cart, but you can have a lot less time and still build something great.
Golf carts seem to be becoming “the thing” in communities across the country. It used to be limited to large properties and golf courses, but that is no longer the case. People are getting bigger tires, sound systems, faster engines, etc. This has naturally driven up the price for good-looking vehicles, but you can still find cheap advance Ducklings if you look hard enough.
The biggest killer of golf carts is bad batteries. Batteries are expensive, and the need to replace the battery every few years results in the old camper being left out in the grass and neglected. I have the red stroller pictured (before conversion) for $250 without batteries. It even includes transportation. These offers can be found here.
What brand of stroller should I buy? In my opinion, when buying an old wagon, don’t bother with anything other than a club car. Why? The club car has been using aluminum body for a very long time. Aluminum frames last longer and Club Car makes superior products. I have a 1973 and 1985 club car. Both tires hold up well.

Lead acid batteries burn and bubble if not discharged or overcharged. Battery acid damages the metal frames of golf carts. The black camper in the first photo is an EZ-GO unit that I bought for parts due to frame rot. He was too rusty to salvage, so he became a parts donor for spare chassis and other parts. Pro tip: Golf carts can be trimmed with rebound rubber to make it easier to place discarded tires in the scrap yard!
If you choose a brand other than Club Car, carefully inspect the frame rails around the battery compartment for rust. This is where they fail in the beginning. Frames can collapse and buyers will fall right in the middle. Almost anything that hits the old camp can be fixed.
Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist are good places to find deals on old shopping carts. Another good way to find them is to ask around where maintenance or security personnel use them. When batteries die, they are discarded and discarded.
The biggest expenses will be the stroller itself and the batteries. Car batteries are designed to hold a lot of current in a short time. RV or deep sea batteries are not a perfect fit, but they will work, albeit within a limited range. This is what I am running in my car and everything works fine. My choice was based on a great deal I got on one year RV batteries.
I use Exide Marine/RV batteries. It works well for me because my panel produces enough current to take some of the load off the battery while driving, and the batteries usually stay charged while I park in the sun.
If you are a tinkerer, people have reused Nissan LEAF lithium batteries with amazing results, but that is beyond the scope of this guide as it requires a lot of specialist skills.
Golf carts can draw a lot of current when speeding or going up hills. This is not the place for autos or other small batteries. Please make sure all your connections are clean and tight. Loose or damaged connections can cause battery cables or terminals to overheat and melt.

Unlike modern car batteries that do not require maintenance, golf cart batteries require maintenance. The water level should be checked periodically by removing the vent covers and looking inside. It should be about 1/4 inch above the flaps. If they seem to need water, use only distilled water. Anything else can destroy a perfectly good battery.
“What about refurbished golf cart batteries?” If the repair company is reputable, it may be worth checking them out as you can save some money. The battery reconditioning process usually involves opening the case, cleaning off any dirt that has accumulated on the plates, sealing the case, and refilling with an appropriate mixture of water and acid.
I’m sure some of you will say, “I have a friend in the junkyard who can get me a car battery.” Car batteries should be a last resort. They are not designed to draw high current continuously. They won’t deal with the stress that a golf cart engine can experience when driving on inclines or rough roads.
Whatever you choose, make sure your batteries match in terms of capacity and approximate life. Battery capacity decreases with age.
How To Replace Golf Cart Batteries
Warning. A fully charged golf cart battery stores an incredible amount of energy. Be very careful with tools and cables.
Cables may or may not be included in the purchase price. If so, check for burns, rust, etc. It should be a thick gauge, usually 4 or 6 gauge. Replacement cable assemblies can be found online for almost any vehicle, but copper is expensive. Be careful of super-cheap cable sets. There is something called CCA. It is covered with aluminum with copper. This is aluminum wire with a layer of copper on the outside. My personal opinion on this topic is to avoid it.

The cables they use are well suited for golf cart use. This is what I used (the red cables between the batteries in the picture). Once you know what make and model of golf cart you have, you will find many golf cart websites that have electronic graphics sets. It is not very complicated. Batteries, direction control (in older vehicles the polarity is reversed on the motor), speed controller and motor.

All bikes have a rechargeable charging station for power, but they are not really designed for high current. I would suggest buying a set of connectors like the truckers install on their trucks to connect the jumper cables so they don’t have to open the hood when someone jumps out. What about electrical cables, sound system, etc.? I used THHN 14-16 gauge wire. It is easy to find and very resistant to rust. You can get enough money for free from anyone who does residential or commercial firework. The longest piece in my car is about ten feet long, so scraps will do the trick.
Unless you’re lucky enough to get something modern with electronic cruise control, you’ll probably be looking at something like the one pictured.
For decades, golf carts have used large relays and resistors made from spools of thick wire to control speed. When the GO pedal (accelerator) is pressed, the switches activate several relays, which pass the current through the corresponding resistors. The result is two or three times faster. It’s like GO, GO, faster. The changes are not smooth. Each step results in a slight increase in speed. Think about driving a car with a fixed transmission and the engine is stuck at one RPM.
