AirAsia has been named the world’s lowest-cost airline by airline rating website Skytrax for 14 consecutive years.
AirAsia is one of Southeast Asia’s most popular budget airlines, and for good reason. In 2022, about 25 million passengers will fly with the airline on more than 160 destinations, including London, Mumbai and Zagreb, Croatia.
Malaysia Airlines has been certified as a three-star low-cost airline by Skytrax. Although AirAsia has been praised by Skytrax for its in-flight service and extensive dining options, the airline has received its fair share of criticism.

AirAsia received the most complaints from Malaysian airlines between January and June 2022, local news site MalayMail reported, citing the Malaysian Civil Aviation Authority.
Passengers complained of poor service when booking, non-refundable refunds for canceled flights, and one passenger reported finding insects in his meal, another local news site, Malaysia Now, reported.
There are more than 20 low-cost airlines in Southeast Asia alone. I traveled to many of them as a travel journalist in Singapore.
I’ve flown with AirAsia five times in the past year, and despite some minor issues, it’s still my top airline for exploring the area.

I last flew AirAsia from the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to the Philippine island province of Cebu at the end of June, and my experience with the airline showed me why it was better than the rest.
KLIA 2 is a terminal dedicated to low-cost airlines such as AirAsia. I arrived on the 7th, more than two hours before my scheduled departure time, but check-in took forever due to the snaking lines and difficulty getting my boarding pass.
AirAsia flights from Kuala Lumpur do not register their destination. Passengers are usually advised to check in online and leave their luggage at the counter.
When I arrived, hundreds of people were already queuing up at several stalls. I got into one of these lines and waited for 20 minutes, but when I got to the counter, I was told to go to another line because the e-ticket was not read.
Mistakes I Made On A Delayed Flight On Low Cost Carrier Cebu Pacific
After waiting in line for almost half an hour at the ticket counter, I finally got a physical ticket and went to immigration.
According to complaints, AirAsia is not punctual – my flight was scheduled to take off 25 minutes late.
The flight to Cebu was scheduled to take off at 9:10 am. but changed to 9:25 am. I have flown AirAsia domestically through Malaysia and the Southeast Asia region and almost every flight is delayed by at least 20 minutes and even an hour.
It wasn’t a big deal that I was late as I spent almost 40 minutes waiting for my turn at immigration that day.
Cheap Flights From Taiwan
According to a 2023 study by Singaporean financial website MoneySmart, many passengers who flew low-cost airlines between May 2022 and the same month this year experienced frequent delays.
For example, about 69 percent of passengers had at least one flight delay with Philippines-based low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific, according to the report.
After immigrating to the country, the airline experience was almost flawless. When paying for a seat in the emergency row, I was the first to sit.
One of the best things about flying with AirAsia is the low fares. Paying for a seat with extra legroom allowed me to board the plane first, and after buying more luggage, it was $102 one-way.

First boarding is one of the few luxuries you can pay a little extra for when flying on budget airlines, and it’s a worthwhile bonus for the extra cost. Don’t rush to board, fight for luggage space in the upper cabin.
Extra legroom is $9, and excess baggage of 20 kg or 44 pounds is about $23.
Flying with low-cost airlines can be cramped and uncomfortable. But the four-hour flight was remarkably quiet, with few passengers.
AirAsia’s regular seats have 18 inches of legroom, while my emergency row seat had 20.3 inches. I’m only 5’1″, so I felt pretty spacey.

General internal maintenance of the aircraft was good. The leather seats don’t peel, and there’s no litter box left in the compartment – I’ve made unfortunate comments on previous budget flights.
After everyone boarded the plane and saw an empty seat, a few passengers moved to larger seats that were more expensive than usual. The cabin crew told them to return to their assigned seats immediately.
As with many low-cost airlines, the atmosphere on board was relaxed – many passengers chatted with friends in the aisles, and a few were busy eating food packed in their carry-on bags.
The food was served promptly as it did not interfere with the flight. The flight attendants were efficient but pleasant – one of them took the time to play with a passenger’s child.
How To Save $400 On Philippine Airlines Flights To London
AirAsia’s dining options are second-best among low-cost airlines in the region, with nine hot meal options available on board.
I’m very impressed with AirAsia’s dining options – apart from the cheap fares, it’s the best part of flying with the airline. Some of the dishes on offer include Malaysian Chicken Rice, Thai Basil and Bukhari Spicy Chicken Biryani. Beverages such as bottled fruit tea and Vietnamese iced coffee were also available.
I have found this meal to be better than business class meals on several national airlines in the region. For example, I paid S$1,600 or S$1,200 for a return business class ticket from Manila to Singapore on Philippine Airlines, and there was no basic meal like ice cream.
I ordered nasi lemak and a bottle of calamansi oolong tea for 20 Malaysian Ringgit ($4.30) and it was one of the best meals I’ve had on a flight.
Trip Report: My Scoot Flight Experience
Having spent twenty years in Singapore, which has a multicultural Malaysian cuisine, I am well-versed in coconut rice dishes such as nasi lemak, sambal, sweet and spicy sauce, anchovies and meat.
But the lemak nasi on board was delicious. The sambal was hot and delicious, and the chicken rendang – a dry soup with spicy marinated meat – had a delicious umami. The food made me feel like I was dining at my favorite destination rather than a budget airline.
With no other passengers next to me, I decided to take a nap lying down, refreshed and ready to explore Cebu.
I saw other passengers adjusting their armrests and reclining on empty row seats, so I decided to follow. I used my backpack as a pillow, which wasn’t ideal, but I still slept uninterrupted.
Flight Booking In Philippines Picks Up Despite International Travel Restrictions
The flight landed in Cebu City 15 minutes ahead of schedule, making up for the late departure time.
Overall, I understand why AirAsia is the best budget airline in the world, but it’s not without its faults.
I usually travel on a budget so I usually fly on budget airlines and AirAsia is currently the best I’ve tried. Delicious in-flight meals and very cheap ticket prices are worth the long check-in queues for me.
AirAsia flies to a wide range of destinations, even on the rare route from Kuala Lumpur to Cebu, making it easy to travel to different destinations at affordable prices. The airline’s reputation for delays may be off-putting to some, but I’m happy to stick with it – flexible schedules are a must on fly days. Do you need to go on a business trip?
