So we had to figure out which rental company to use for our family of 4 to explore the North Island and South Island in 32 days. The interesting part was that I didn’t know anything about people camping or traveling this way. Recruiting people living in NZ as well as across the country. I didn’t know the word for caravan and of course in Canada we have to drive on the opposite side of the road! So after many YouTube videos, reading reviews and asking many other travelers we decided to go to Maui Campervan, New Zealand.

We loved everything we included and the overall positive feedback we received from previous guests. For our family we decided to go with the 6-Berth Maui Campervans NZ as it would allow us to keep our travel spots and not have to change the toddler bed every day. We can get up early in the morning and leave the campsites and make life easier.

Overall pick up and drop off was easy, a bit more involved than a simple car rental but same concept.
Boarded the bus to Christchurch. The Maui NZ company picked us up from the airport and drove us to a nearby facility where we watched a video and went over the rental details with a staff member. It is very simple, organized and fun to handle. It took maybe an hour from the time we arrived in Christchurch to our campsite.

We landed at Auckland Camp. We cleaned up as we picked her up, unloaded our bags, and were checked in by the Maui staff. I filled out the paperwork and got my deposit back. Then they took us to the airport.
Our water pump suddenly stopped working while we were in Rotorua. So we had to call the service line and they walked us through a few different options to try to troubleshoot and fix it. It was determined that this should be repaired by a service technician. He was there within hours and fixed the problem, friendly service and agreed with the operator over the phone that there was nothing we could do.
Keep in mind we were in a large facility so the response time was quick. If we are somewhere too far, someone will put us in line for our next destination.
I always judge a company by how they handle issues and I was very surprised at how easily the issue was resolved and the genuine care taken to make sure we were taken care of.

When you book with Maui, you won’t always find the exact type you see online. We thought about getting the model we saw, but in reality it wasn’t a problem if you could get a model that fit that category (ie 4 seater, 6 seater, etc.). Great, but we were expecting a different model. The structure in the trailer was 1 foot longer than expected.
I had extra expenses when I came to Christchurch and went to Auckland. This worked for our trip, but if you want to save money, skip Maui for a stop.
Paid tent facilities are designed for long-term travelers – laundry, barbecue, shower, cooking facilities and information desk. We free camped in a few places and tried to blend into these camping buildings to regroup.

We planned our trip well to optimize our travel time. By the time we arrived in New Zealand it was month 10 of our world trip and we were exhausted from planning. So we drove and figured it out along the way. My recommendation is to plan ahead for the body you want to build.
