It’s not like I’ve made a new discovery here. The tradition of sweat lodges has been around since time immemorial, from Native American sweat lodges to bathhouses in Russia, Turkey, Finland, Japan and elsewhere. For hundreds of years, people in all parts of the world have sweated intentionally for benefits such as core relaxation, skin health, heart health and more. So one of the many unfortunate consequences of Covid-19 hit me hard. All saunas and fitness studios are closed. It finally felt right to invest in building my own backyard sauna. After a little research, I purchased an outdoor barrel sauna from Near Heaven Saunas.

The sauna was placed on a pallet and the worker assembled it in 5-6 hours. This is a sauna for two people, but is actually suitable for one person. The electrician had to lay modernized power lines to connect the Harvia heater in the sauna, which took another half a day.

Along with the sauna, I purchased a 150 gallon tank to use as a cold plunge pool. I filled it with water from the garden hose. No ice. In the Bay Area it is cold enough with plain tap water. I add some hydrogen peroxide to the water to keep it clean and empty and refill it with clean water every 10 days. I haven’t installed a DIY refrigerator yet; nor do you treat yourself to an expensive, special jump. So far it’s working.
