We’ll say it right away: renting a campervan in New Zealand is not cheap. Even if you choose the absolute cheapest company, you will still pay a significant amount.
However, caravanning is a great way to save money on your trip as you can cook your own meals (much cheaper than eating out!) and you can also find free campsites (cheaper than staying in hotels !).

First of all, the time of year can significantly affect the price. If you are traveling during the peak summer season (ie December to March), expect to pay peak prices. Conversely, if you travel during the off-season, you may be able to get a good price. If you have a large budget to work with and are hoping for a fairly high level of comfort, you may be drawn to larger campers. They look luxurious as hell! But before you pull the trigger, think about what it would be like to drive such a large vehicle.
Roads in New Zealand (especially in the South Island) can be quite narrow and winding. Overall, we were quite comfortable driving our van, but there were a few times when we were extremely glad we weren’t driving one of those giant campers.
If you are used to driving on the left side of the road or have experience with large vehicles, you may be fine with one of the larger models.

Note to self: My parents were planning a trip from mid-February to mid-March, and when they started looking in early January, many of the good companies were already fully booked or were the prices are insanely high!
