Adding Air Tank To Compressor – I was given this 5 gallon portable air tank, but you can get one from Harbor Freight or Northern Industrial for about $30-35. It is filled with a car tire valve (Schrader) and has an integrated pressure gauge, pressure relief valve and tire filler cap.

I have a small garage compressor. It’s a 1.3 HP compressor that delivers 2.4 scfm at 90 psi, which is decent if you need to blow things up, run the occasional air blower, or do some light spray painting, but not high efficiency. It only has a 1.5 gallon tank, so if you start using a lot of air, it won’t last long.

Air Receiver Tank

I bought some on the appliance/air compressor island at Home Depot to add the ability to connect a 5 gallon tank between my small compressor and plasma cutter using standard quick connect fittings. The air fill hose that comes with the tank is equipped with a standard 1/4″ NPT connector, so all I needed was a T, a ball valve, a quick connect assembly, and a male adapter. I had to cut the gauge 90 degrees to fit both ends of the T.

One end of the T goes into the ball valve and is quickly connected to the filling connector. This side is attached to the air compressor and allows the tank to be filled with my small compressor and act as an air buffer. The other end of the T goes to a female quick-connect adapter that allows any standard QC tube to be attached. I added a ball valve so I can close it and separate the tank from the compressor and leave it alone, although I will primarily be using an “internal” tank. If you buy it new this part is $15, half the cost of the tank. We wanted bicycle tires and sometimes van tires as quickly as possible. We installed a compressor and an air tank. The tank can also be used to power the air suspension seats. Factory suspension seats have been installed and we are thinking about buying these because the ones we ordered are out of stock.

The Viair air compressor sits under the back of the van and supplies pressure to the 3-gallon tank next to it. We mounted the compressor on the rock panel at a 90 degree angle and mounted the tank on the main frame rail. Originally we were going to use a Viair kit with a 2.5 gallon tank, but that tank doesn’t fit easily in the back of the van.

The compressor wiring runs inside the rocker panel, from the bottom of the van, through a cable duct to the inside of the rear wall. From there it goes through a switch on the wall near the back door to a circuit breaker panel shaped like a 30A.

We had to decide which tank outlet to use for each component. A discharge valve, pressure on the base / isolation relay, compressor inlet and quick connection outlet are connected in the inflator. We used 90 degree elbows on some of the shoes to keep everything in place comfortably.

The 1/8″ air tubes worked a little harder. Two of them had to run to an area inside the back doors. One is the tank pressure, and finally there is a gauge. The other regulates the pressure and connects to a quick-connect socket so that we can easily inflate the bicycle tires. We insert these tubes into the D-pillar, attach the cage and fasten them with some plastic plugs that cover the holes in the pillar.

Another pipe must pass before these. We traced the wiring channel from rear to front on the chassis track, mainly because if it was good enough for the Mercedes, it was good enough for us, but also gave us some free fixing points to let’s connect the pipe.

The pipe goes into the filter under the driver’s seat. There was a small rubber bushing, which we removed, enlarged the hole slightly and installed a screw cap with a built-in ball valve. This makes it easier to replace or remove the airbags in the future without dismantling the entire system. We used one-handed controls throughout the system. You can get 1/4″ NPT connections, tees, crosses and all other interesting types. They make connecting and removing the tube easier than using old fashioned fittings if you insert the tube properly first.

Since we were already running the air hoses to the driver and passenger seat platforms, it made sense to attach a second quick connect screw to the passenger seat platform. We used 1/4″ screws to hold the front and rear quick connect bolts. For the front quick release we will know if we use these seat bases or buy smaller ones for our new seat and bars, don’t go through the holes in the seat base for the front quick release.

A pressure regulator and filter must be added to the line. The tank has a pressure of 200 PSI, which is too much for a bicycle tire. The adjustable pressure regulator we bought can drop that pressure down to a reasonable 120 PSI for street tires, or lower if we prefer. The pressure regulator and filter should be accessible, but not too visible to the casual observer and impossible to separate from the things we push on the road. They ended up on the opposite side of the chassis track from the tank, protected by the spare wheel.

The air intake filter is located inside the D-pillar, near the rear quick coupler. It must be dry and free of dust, and we cannot reach it to replace the filter element. The compressor is rated IP67, but we are thinking of making a cover for the whole area to protect everything from road dirt and stone chips.

Update: We found that the air filter is at 150 psi and the tank at 200 psi, so we removed that from the system.
