The Mazda MX-3 was a rare coupe with a smaller V6 engine than most modern four-cylinders – the holy grail.

The 1980s and 1990s were a wild time for the Japanese auto industry. The “Bubble Era” produced bags like the Acura NSX, Suzuki Cappuccino and Lexus LS 400. Mazda brought its own hits like the MX-5 Miata and RX-7 FD. The list of Japanese hits of the day would probably be endless, and one perhaps forgotten entry includes another Mazda. The Mazda MX-3 was Mazda’s second attempt, and it was a small car with great technology like passive rear-wheel steering and what is the smallest mass-produced V6 engine you can buy in America. At 1.8 liters it’s probably smaller than most fours you can buy today.

Why The 1992–96 Mazda Mx 3 Is A Classic Worth Remembering

It reminds us that there was a time when Chevrolet was willing to sell you a sports car with a 415-horsepower 6.2-liter LS3 V8 mated to a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission. The Australian import deal fulfilled Bob Lutz’s dream of funky General Motors products and helped keep the Holden factory open for a while. Given these factors, the Chevrolet SS was never a strong seller, and may never have been. The auto publications loved it, as did some of the enthusiasts in attendance. There were only 12,924 examples of the Chevrolet SS, and only 2,645 of those were manual transmissions. It may be the most underrated modern sports car sold in America.

Today’s grail continues on the path of underrated cars. It comes from the wild bubble era.

Many of these cars are sought after by enthusiasts today and sold for money on auction sites. I would also say that today’s Grail is overshadowed by its more popular peers. The Mazda MX-3 was sold alongside the slightly more expensive MX-5 Miata and the much more expensive third-generation RX-7. This car wasn’t a revival of the British roadster or Wankel-powered wonder, but it’s still worth a look.

It’s a story you’ve probably heard many times, but the Japanese economy was in a huge bubble, and through it all, consumers got cars and motorcycles that were not only fun to drive, but made legitimate leaps in technology. . Car and motorcycle manufacturers used different techniques and the designs became so good that cars from that era still cover bedroom walls (as posters).

I’ve had the pleasure of driving a variety of vehicles from the bubble era, from the KE car to Acura’s NSX sports car. I have yet to drive a sports car as good as this NSX, and that includes Acura’s new NSX. Honda hasn’t just played gems this season; Mazda also released some cars during this period that were so good that they are very popular today.

The Miata started out as a sketch in 1970 before Mazda brass decided to put the roadster into production. One of the Roadster’s design proposals was a version closer to the Toyota MR2.

One proposal was for Mazda to be mid-engined and rear-wheel drive, while the other called for front-wheel drive. In the end, American design won out, giving the Miata the look and feel of an old British roadster. The Miata debuted at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show to rave reviews from critics and owners alike. Mazda continues the Miata tradition to this day, and I can say from personal experience that it remains an exciting drive for the price you pay.

The MX-5 alone would be a highlight for any automaker, but we’re talking about Mazda. It also produced the third-generation RX-7 from 1992, and I’ll let the British arm of the automaker explain just how great that car is:

Mazda Mx 3 1991 1998

The third and final generation (“FD”) that arrived in 1992 was a true performance car. The new in-line twin turbocharger increased the output of the previous 13B engine to 239 hp in the European version. Admirers say it has the best handling of any RX-7, with a 0-100km/h sprint of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h (limited) that puts the 1,300kg two-seater in the league with premium sports cars – it’s perfect for sport. . A brand that just won at Le Mans.

Later, the RX-7 went even better with power output reaching 276 hp in Japan-only models. Alongside these cars were the smaller MX-3 and MX-6 coupes. At a base price of $11,000 ($23,962 today), the MX-3 was slightly cheaper than the $13,800 Miata ($30,062 today) and much cheaper than the $32,900 RX-7 ($71,670 today) .

In 1991, Mazda continued its success with the MX-5 by releasing a sibling called the MX-3. It wasn’t a rear-wheel drive sports roadster. Instead, it was a front-wheel-drive budget sports car that could seat four and was meant to compete with the likes of the Jio Storm, Toyota Paseo and Nissan NX2000. The MX-3 won’t wow the press and customers by being an affordable sports car like the Miata or a rolling plow like the RX-7. Instead, this car will be cheaper with some technology.

Launched in September 1991 and 1992, the MX-3 rode on Mazda’s EC platform, which shared some parts with the BG platform that underpinned the Mazda 323. The MX-3 had funky styling and a nice interior, but under and under the hood. The torso is where things got interesting. At launch, the base engine was a 1.6-liter four that produced 88 horsepower. It will later increase to 106 hp.

However, the crown jewel of the MX-3 will be its optional V6 engine. Here in the US, we get the engine in the GS trim level. This engine stands out for its cylinder capacity: only 1.8 liters. At the time, it was the smallest mass-produced V6 available in America. This is the car a MEK reader would regret not getting if it were the grail:

For your Holy Grail column, I submit for consideration the 1994 Mazda MX-3 GS with the little V6. I always wanted one of these when I was in college, but (obviously) couldn’t afford it. A car I definitely regret not buying when I had the chance. One of those great Japanese curiosities, now almost forgotten, from when money flowed through the streets of Tokyo and they could try all kinds of fun things.

This picture doesn’t do the engine justice, just check out their blog! Unfortunately, the seller of this eBay listing did not use a banana for the measurements:

The K8 engine was a 24-valve, 60-degree split engine with an aluminum block and heads. This little one also featured what Mazda calls the Variable Resonance Induction System, which allows for more torque throughout the rev range. It works with dual resonance tubes that use butterfly valves that open and close at different RPMs and therefore different tube lengths. In other words, this engine may only have 115 lb-ft at 4500 rpm, but the engine did its best to produce as much torque as possible across the entire band.

This machine was also one that needed to be driven hard to fight with plenty of power. Power was calculated at 130 at 6500 rpm. So to get the most out of your little MX-3, you need to race it at 7,000 rpm. I should also note that despite being sixth, this engine wasn’t even the most powerful in its class. The Geo Storm GSi’s 1.8-liter four produced 140 horsepower, while the Nissan NX2000 had a 2.0-liter four that made 140 horsepower. V6

The smallest V6 ever produced. Mitsubishi had a 1.6-liter V6 in production at the same time, although it was not available for purchase in the US.

Another fun fact about this engine is that it was developed in Japan to cover the taxes that were levied on 2.0 liter and larger engines.

A Los Angeles Times review of the MX-3 acknowledges that Mazda’s main selling point with this engine is that it’s actually a V6 housed in a body that would normally only fit a four. This is reflected in Mazda’s engineering document on the engine:

Today people are not so much concerned about material wealth as they are about spiritual wealth. When it comes to cars, there is a growing demand for cars that are more fun to drive and environmentally friendly (low emissions and great fuel economy). V6 engines are becoming popular for their smooth and quiet characteristics. However, in the “family utility” and “compact features” car categories, conventional V6 engines cannot meet the demands of light, compact and fun driving. The newly developed K-series engines are small, fit stylish and compact vehicles and attract customers.
