For a 16-year-old in the 1970s, the 50cc Fantic was the closest you could get to simulating Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper flying in the American South.
So when Colin needed something to replace his unreliable Honda CB50, his first bike, choosing the new Fantic was a “no brainer”.
More than 40 years later, the posters may be gone, but Colin still owns the offending moped from the ‘sixteen marks’ era, which saved the chopper from scrapheap not once, but twice, on the road. .
“I’ll keep it forever,” says Colin, now 59. “I’ll throw it in the oven and come with me.”

By the time he reached legal riding age, Colin, who runs a successful construction company, was old enough to ride on two wheels because his home was near the local landfill.
“I’ve been riding bikes since I was seven or eight years old,” he said. “I lived on a farm and there was a dump behind us, and the amount of stuff that was thrown there was amazing.”
Among the abandoned bikes were machines that would now fetch a pretty penny, including a BSA Gold Star 500cc, two 350cc BSAs, six Lambrettas, a Velocette and a Scott Squirrel: “a really nice old bike”.
They were all runners that their owners just wanted to get rid of, but for Colin they were an exciting prospect.

“I was like Stig from Dump. I pushed these bikes down the hill and down the road towards home, I strengthened them and made trackers that I can use on the farm,” he remembers.
“I would take the cylinder head, hit it with a hammer, squirt oil or gasoline inside, push it into gear so the piston would go down and down and, it would always run.
“I destroyed most of them and brought them back – maybe they’re still buried there!”
After years of riding on private land, when Colin was 16 years old, he set off on a CB50 that would drop him once on the road. It was time for the poster on his wall to become a reality.

“I really should have bought the SS50, but when I saw the Fantic, it was a no-go,” he said. “It was very different from all the others. Easy Rider was so cool at 16 and when you see Fantic, what do you do? It was meant to be. “
“You can’t buy two new Fizzies with that,” says Colin, referring, of course, to the best-selling Yamaha FS1E.
“A few months later they dropped the price to £226. I couldn’t be happier, especially as I had staff buying!”
At first, Colin and Fantic’s relationship seems to be not going to last longer than the average teenage love – they broke up after six months, almost £100 still owed to HP.

A complete change of scenery Colin bought a Lambretta Li125, inspired by his older brother’s love of scooters.
“My older brother is five years older than me, he had Lambrettas and I found a bug that he still had, so I decided to get one,” he said.
“At the time, nobody wanted them because they weren’t popular after the sixties but before the fashion renaissance. You could buy a Lambretta for 20 bucks.”
It was more than just any old Lambretta, as the proximity of British Leyland extras led to Colin, along with other local kids, taking full advantage.

“A lot of dads used to smuggle in some bikes and hang them up during lunch,” he explained.
“In nine or 10 months, I converted every part of it to chrome – the frame, the running boards, the side panels, everything was chrome.
“It was 1976 and the summer was very hot, I was stopped by the police who said ‘we have been following you for a long time.’ I said ‘what should I do?’ He said ‘it’s not illegal but you have to do it. something about it (pointing to the scooter) – we’ve had a lot of complaints about people looking at that bloody bike.’
