In fourth gear, the throttle is wide open from straight to low. The right-hander comes to the front. Don’t break yet… now! falls on the face Shift down two gears with the left pedal. Remove the stops and turn the steering wheel clockwise. Make power easy. Feel the weight return. Manage that balance as the tires cut the incline. Aim for the exit and unlock the mount by pressing the gas to the floor.

No, I’m not in Formula 1 racing to knock McLaren’s latest hypercar. I’m driving a Mazda CX-5 Turbo on a mountain road 20 minutes north of Santa Monica, CA and it drives great. I’m serious. I drove up to this serpentine Topanga Twister that looked like a half-engined sports car. Compact crossovers from big brands shouldn’t be this fun.

Difference Between The 2021 Mazda Cx 5 Sport And Cx 5 Touring

Such worship of CKS-5 is nothing new. We liked the 2017 model, which we reviewed for a year. In 2021, Mazda will install a new infotainment system in every CX-5 and add some driver aids to the top-of-the-line Signature trim. We took one of those models out for a spin to test the updated technology and see if it still doesn’t give the luxury SUV a run for their money.

Fuel the CKS-5 with 87 octane and its turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4 makes 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Boost it with 93 octane and output rises to 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. This being California, we didn’t find a gas station with the good stuff. Still, the CX-5 accelerates well. It hit 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.6 seconds at 94.9 mph, making it one of the fastest gas-powered compact SUVs. It beats the Ford Escape 2.0T, which hits 60 in 6.9 seconds and 89.3 mph in 15.3 seconds. Only the electrified RAV4 Prime can go faster; Toyota claims a 0-100km/h time of under 6.0 seconds. Still, it’s faster than the non-turbo CX-5, which takes about 8.0 seconds to hit 60 mph.

Of course, with this power, fuel consumption is reduced. The CX-5 Turbo is rated by the EPA at 24 mpg. Some rivals in the segment are more economical, such as the Chevrolet Equinox, which gets 27 mpg, or the Honda CR-V, which returns 29 mpg.

Associate Road Test Editor Eric Ayapana noted how the turbo engine “puts off the power smoothly.” In fact, its torque-forward character provides easy acceleration with a nice, deep growl. Turbocharged CX-5s come standard with all-wheel drive, but torque is lacking – the MazdaSpeed 3 feel remains. Power is good in the midrange, but the engine revs breathlessly at the top end. “Quick gear changes would be good,” Ayapana said. He is right; The six-speed automatic seems outdated in today’s eight-speed and higher transmissions. Nevertheless, it gets the job done.

Mazda Cx 5 Review & Ratings

The CX-5 stopped at 60 mph in 129 feet. This matches our previous results, but is longer than some competitors. Our last Subaru Forester stopped at 117 feet, while the Nissan Rogue managed it at 114 feet. Ayapana found “minimal dive or side movement” when pedaling slowly, but felt “the tires didn’t cut much.” I wonder what the spring tires will do?

I enjoyed the Mazda CX-30, although many of my peers did not. Its sharp steering and direct commands pleased my enthusiast, but I wouldn’t call it sporty. Could the old, bulky CX-5 feel any better? oh yes While the CX-30’s rear suspension softens its responses, the CX-5’s independent tuning gives it consistent agility. The small penalty in ride comfort is totally worth it. Its cornering is excellent, even better than the SUVs with stylish adjustable dampers I’ve written about. It remains stable along its curves, deftly resisting body roll.

But the numbers tell a different story. In the track test, this CX-5 averaged 0.80 grams on the skidpad and 27.7 seconds, averaging 0.61 grams over eight laps. Both figures beat the non-turbo CX-30 by 27.4 seconds, which peaked at 0.83g and averaged 0.62g. I hate to embarrass the CX-5, but its handling figures are on par with the Toyota Venza – except at figure eight, where the plush hybrid beats it by 0.62 grams. To be fair, we got 0.62g in the last CX-5 test, so maybe it was a good day.

Road test editor Chris Walton found the CX-5’s unbeatable stability control too intrusive, braking or cutting power before crossing the line. He thinks these electronics hinder his potential, saying, “There’s a lot more athleticism here than is allowed to be displayed.” Still, he praised its “natural and precise” handling, good cornering ability and chassis balance.

Mazda Cx 5 Kuro Edition 2021

The old 7.0- or 8.0-inch infotainment display has been replaced by a new 10.3-inch unit for 2021. As before, positioned at the top of the dashboard in your line of sight, it looks clear and colorful with a wide aspect ratio and a height that matches the design of the cabin. The thing is, it’s still not a touchscreen, even though it’s easily accessible from the front seats.

Is this a problem? Not quite, found Online Contributing Editor Duncan Brady in our long-term Mazda 3 infotainment review. The control wheel adds extra steps you can avoid and forces you to spin where you can tap directly. Apple CarPlay fits the new screen well; Android Auto is also standard. The Bose stereo in the Signature model only sounds good, not great. A full digital gauge cluster isn’t available, but the head-up display is a constant help.

For 2021, it adds Signature’s driver assistance package, which includes attention monitoring and automatic reverse braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring. In my experience, Mazda’s driver aids aren’t as intuitive as some rivals, but they’re definitely more useful. Sure, the CX-5 has high safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA.

If you’ve been paying attention in recent years, you’ll know that Mazda has been on the rise, producing products that not only look, but feel, expensive. In fact, we put an identical CX-5 up against a legitimate luxury SUV – guess which came out on top? However, there are some hurdles that need to be overcome before becoming a top player.

The 2021 Mazda Cx 5 Is Worth The Upgrade For The New Safety Features

One is the heated steering wheel. The top and bottom of the ring are not heated, only the sides. This is where you have to catch it, but if you deviate from the correct form, you remember the penny. The second signature model has laminated wood panels. I had to squint to make sure it was real. It is, and it still doesn’t sound interesting. Something like the rosewood used by Mazda on the CX-9 Signature would be reasonably nice.

The flat, unsupported, hard-cushioned front seats need the most improvement. Mazda can do better and succeed in their other cars. After 1,500 miles in my long-term Mazda 3 I had no complaints. They may be warm, airy and wrapped in handsome brown leather, but they’re the main drag on the luxury of the Signature trim.

However, some luxury SUVs could do with the CX-5 Turbo. Namely, how to have so much fun behind the wheel. It gets around town like a small SUV, then let me treat it like a sports car in Topanga. No, it’s not the most spacious, practical or efficient compact crossover. This is definitely the best ride. Mazda’s sales leader, the CX-5, returns for the 2021 model year with some great updated safety features and a not-so-great updated infotainment system. That mixed offering adds enough to this latest iteration of a potential challenger to the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4 in the growing compact SUV market: it looks and looks where it counts. There is a job to do.

Suv Review: 2021 Mazda Cx 5 Kuro Edition

Interior space is impressive, but the seats and ride quality fall short of the cabin’s premium promises. The powertrain is really strong – and hello, all the rockets that come with the acceleration will never let you forget it.

For a full context of our experience with the CKS-5, check out reviewer Brian Normale’s comprehensive review at the link above. But keep reading for an overview of the pros and cons of the new SUV.

Handling is consistently confident and precise, not understated as expected from Mazda. Plus, even in the snowy conditions we tested it in, the CX-5’s brakes and tires assured us that when pressed, they’d really get the job done. (This may seem like a given, but it’s nice to know you’re in good hands in the winter of Chicago’s home base…or good shoes.)

Cabin furnishings are reliably luxurious as Mazda continues to excel with near-luxury interiors. The top-level Signature trim we tested is clad in lush Catura brown leather and has a heavy, substantial feel.
