If popular small SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are too big or expensive, going with a small SUV is a good way to downsize. The 2020 Mazda CX-3 is a strong choice in that class. In particular, it stands out with attractive styling, fun driving modes, respectable fuel economy and a long list of features.
Driving cost estimates for the 2020 Mazda CX-3 Sport 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl 6A) and comparable vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway) and power. Average lead in North Dakota is estimated at $3.06 per gallon.
For 2020, the CX-3 is available in just one Sport trim compared to last year’s four options. Along with this model, you get advanced safety features as well as some driver aids. However, the CX-3 has inherent flaws such as less-than-average cargo space and tight rear seats. As much as we like the CX-3, we’d recommend buying it against the top-of-the-line Hyundai Kona, the roomy Honda HR-V or the Kia Soul.

How does the CX-3 drive? While there isn’t enough power for normal city driving, the CX-3 has no problem merging with freeway traffic. But once it accelerates, cruising on the highway or maintaining speed on steep grades, maximum throttle is required.
Despite the lack of power, the CX-3 is still one of the best cars to drive in its class. The CX-3’s steering makes it easy to maneuver through fast, flowing turns. But the tires squirm even at the slightest cornering speed, ruining the fun you can have on a twisty desert road.
How comfortable is the CX-3? The Mazda actually does, thanks to its firm but compliant suspension. Body control is excellent for the class and everything from speed bumps to highway splits is handled beautifully. Likewise, broken pavement doesn’t really bother Mazda.
Most people will find the CX-3’s front seats compliant and comfortable, but those with larger frames will find the lumbar and rear support seats a little low. Imperfect roads introduce a fair amount of road noise into the cabin. But it folds next to engine noise under hard acceleration.

How is the interior? A clean and minimal approach keeps all controls within easy reach of the driver. The center display is touchscreen capable and is controlled by an easy-to-use button next to the steering wheel. Fortunately, the screen is not washed out by sunlight. Thanks to the low hood and slim roof pillars, visibility is generous when you’re looking. Rear visibility is adequate.
Front passengers enjoy a very spacious interior with plenty of shoulder and leg room as well as room around the driver’s arms. Adults sitting in the back can be uncomfortable, especially if the front passengers are tall. But children should have enough space.
How about technology? The CX-3 is at or near the top of the class with its intuitive and comfortable infotainment interface, along with driver assistance features like traffic-adjustable cruise control. There’s no native navigation system, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard equipment. With better integration with your phone and more intuitive voice control, we prefer these options over navigation systems in other Mazdas anyway.
How is the store? Even for this type of vehicle, cargo space behind the rear seats is a bit tight. The rear seats are easy to fold away from the cargo area as the latch on the back of the seat is within arm’s reach. The rear seats don’t lie completely flat, but they do.

Front passengers get bins in the center console, which can double as cupholders, but aren’t very good—cans and bottles are constantly moving around. There is a tray for storing mobile phones, but it is too small for the latest phones.
For child duties, the CX-3’s rear car seat anchors are visible and easily accessible. You have to slide the front seats forward a bit to install a front safety seat, but access through the rear doors is good for installation and removal.
How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the front-wheel-drive CX-3 gets 31 mpg in city/highway driving, which puts it on par with rivals Honda and Hyundai. With all-wheel drive, that number drops to 29 mpg. On our 115-mile mixed-drive evaluation route, our front-wheel-drive CX-3 test vehicle returned 31 mpg.
Is the CX-3 a good value? While most small crossovers look like the originals of their cars with hard plastics and inspired styling, Mazda decided that small vehicles shouldn’t be cheap. It is the biggest feeling vehicle in the class. Overall, the CX-3 easily justifies its price.

The 2020 Mazda CX-3 is now only available in the Sport trim level with no options. Basically you have to choose a color and decide if you want all-wheel drive.
The Mazda CX-3 handles better than any other car in its class. I tested five other vehicles, including the Mini, and the Mazda was the most fun to drive. My fuel economy so far has been better than expected. Seat comfort is important to me on long journeys, and once again the CX-3 offers very supportive and comfortable seats, very close to my old Volvo. Love… this compact SUV and the upscale feel inside and out.
If I had to choose one car for all needs, light duty, good gas mileage and overall performance, this car would be the one. I love the color, it’s small, easy to clean and shines well. People came up to me and complimented me on the color of the paint. Passengers congratulated me on the journey. Most importantly, I find it a comfortable and affordable vehicle to drive; Easy to get in and out. The front seats feel roomy for a small vehicle. The most comfortable and very quiet GTX I’ve ever bought. Families will enjoy the sunroof and riding environment and experience. I chose this vehicle because in my price range it is available with a top package that includes several accessories that are missing in more expensive cars. Backup camera with navigation, lane change assist, gravity assist, warning assist are just part of the package. I have a twenty year old Miata that has had tires, brakes, and plugs replaced. It is still very reliable, but smaller and narrower. I love the CX3 seats for long trips. It’s quieter than the Miata, not as close in corners. I usually get better gas mileage with the CX3 because I feel more relaxed while driving. I’d like to have a Miata sport-sized platform with a little more headroom and a little more accommodation. I often find that my gas mileage is 41mpg, even though I average 31mpg. It can be seen at speeds of 60 mph or less. Average mileage decreases at a rate greater than seventy. Twenty-seven miles per gallon is good at seventy to eighty. Most of my driving is on country roads.
I’ve had my CX3 for a few months now and I’m enjoying driving it more and more. Sure it’s small but you should know in research. Take a test drive. The car suits my family’s needs. I am 6′ 2″, my wife is 5′ 4″ and I am 3.5 years old. The front car seat provides a comfortable place for my wife and daughter. That would be a breach of contract. I want a small, fun car
