The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata offers a return to the roots of sports car fun in classic roadster or new RF body styles.

For the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the philosophy is and always has been back to basics. Now in its fourth generation, this concept is as good as ever, as Mazda has tried to keep weight low and the fun factor high.

Mazda Mx 5 Rf Pricing And Specs: New Hard Top In Australia From February

We review the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata A 6.8. Highlights include lively acceleration, nimble handling, sleek styling and fuel economy, while the only real downsides are a lack of space and a few missing safety features. (More on how we value cars.)

The Miata enters its second year of redesign, adding the RF body style. The RF stands for Retractable Fastback and comes with a retractable hardtop that gives it the appearance of a coupe with the roof up and a Targa with the roof down.

The RF joins the standard Roadster, but is priced at a premium and is only available in the top-of-the-line Club and Grand Touring models, leaving the base Sport model behind the Roadster. The look is low-key and sleek, with graceful curves and refined details inside and out.

Weighing around 2,300-2,400 pounds, the Miata delivers plenty of smiles per mile. The engine is a pedestrian 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower, but can launch the car from 0 to 60 mph in about six seconds. The 6-speed manual transmission offers maximum feel and enjoyment, but the 6-speed automatic transmission also works well, especially in sport mode.

Review: 2021 Mazda Mx 5 Miata Club

Dynamically, the Miata is among the best cars on the market, proving that a sports car doesn’t need to ride rough roads or stay flat in corners to be fun. The Miata leans into corners, then turns and turns predictably. The ride is firm but almost as forgiving as a family sedan.

The interior is spacious enough for two people and has room for many small items and a few overnight bags. The ergonomics of the passenger compartment are exemplary, the cabin is quieter than in the past, and the RF model isolates noise even better with the top. Despite its back-to-basics approach, the Miata offers some touches of modernity. The infotainment system is standard on all but the base model and comes with satellite radio, app access and text messaging functionality. The Grand Touring model offers niceties like heated leather seats, automatic climate control and a universal garage door opener. The Club model is even sportier; When ordered with a manual transmission, it comes with Bilstein shocks, a shock tower mount, and a limited-slip differential. Buyers can also get BBS wheels and Brembo brakes. The Miata also has several advanced active safety features, including blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-departure alerts, automatic high beams, and adaptive cornering headlights. Fuel economy is tops among sports cars, with the automatic delivering 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and 29 combined.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata offers a sports car profile with a sleek, low-slung stance that matches the RF coupe-like bodywork even better.

2017 Mazda Mx 5 Miata Horsepower

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata features the long-roof, short-deck proportions of a classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car, and its body is sculpted and detailed.

This Turbocharged Mazda Mx 5 Will Do 155mph

The look is expressed by the low but open grille, the finely detailed headlights, the arc of the fender lines and the Coca-Cola shape on the sides. The hood is curved, the tail tapers and the body panels make the car look low and sleek.

The RF is even better looking, with the look of a classic coupe with a raised retractable hardtop. The top takes 13 seconds to open or close, and the look when it’s down is more Targa than convertible. This is because the part that forms the rear pillars and the cross member between them stays in place while the roof is folded. When the top is down, the only smooth line that defines the top of the car is broken, giving the car an awkward look from some angles. We give the MX-5 Miata an 8 for styling, recognizing the stark overall design, classic sports car shape and striking RF body style. (Read more about how we rate cars.) The interior doesn’t stand out like the exterior. Although mostly well-coordinated, the infotainment screen sits on the dashboard rather than being integrated into the design. Some may even feel that the technology represented by this screen is anathema to the simple, car-centric spirit of driving. Mazda does a good job with color though, introducing an exterior color to the top of the doors and providing a two-tone look for some interiors.

The light weight and small size of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata give it smiley handling and lively acceleration despite modest power.

The strong point of the MX-5 Miata is its lightness. The base Roadster weighs just 2,331 pounds, allowing for nimble handling, strong acceleration despite modest horsepower, and frugal fuel economy. We add responsive handling and give the Miata an 8 for performance. (More on how we value cars.)

A Quick History Of Mazda’s Mx 5 Miata Sports Car, From 1989 To Now

Behind the wheel, the Miata feels downright lively. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine produces just 155 horsepower, but with a manual transmission it pushes the little roadster to 0-60 mph. Time about six seconds. To use the power, you need to get it up to 3000 rpm. If you push past the 4,800 rpm torque peak, the Miata responds like a much more powerful car. It’s also easy because the engine runs willingly.

Shifting a manual gearbox is a pleasure. The gearbox shifts smoothly between gears and the light, smooth and progressive feel of the clutch makes this car easy to drive on rough roads or in city traffic. Mazda also offers a 6-speed automatic transmission that does a good job of keeping the engine in its effective rev range when you select Sport mode. While an automatic transmission is easier to drive every day, you lose the feel and control over power you get with a manual. The power steering is quick and direct, if a bit light. The double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear setup lean more into corners than you’d expect from a sports car. However, it turns and carves them in with precision, and that camber provides feedback on when the tires are about to lose traction. We find no difference in handling between the Roadster and the RF. Find a twisty canyon road and you can push the Miata hard without any dynamic surprises. While it’s easy to drive fast, you don’t have to break the speed limit to have fun. The low driving position and its relation to the vehicle’s roll center create a natural and informative driving experience that is sure to put a smile on your face. Want a little more performance? You get a club model with a manual transmission, which comes with firmer Bilstein shocks, an A-clamp and a limited-slip differential. The club offers more precise control with slightly less body lean. If it can be felt more for a split second immediately after a turn; The club shows little to no weight transfer due to the front suspension loading before the rear. The trade-off is certain ride comfort. That’s good because the Miata rides pretty well, a benefit of the light weight and generally soft suspension setup. The Miata can filter out small potholes and vibrations caused by broken pavement, but sharper bumps and ruts can ruin passenger comfort, especially in the Club model.

The MX-5 Miata is a small two-seater, but Mazda engineers used as much space as possible inside the car. That gives it a bit more headroom and legroom than previous Miatas.

2017 Mazda Mx 5 Miata Horsepower

We give the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata a 5 for comfort and quality, adding one point for good front seats and subtracting one for lack of utility. (More on how we value cars.)

Mazda Mx 5 Miata

The Miata has perfected the ergonomics of how the driver sits in terms of the steering wheel, pedals and most controls. But part of the design is a little different. Cup holders are removable; One requires an awkward rearward extension, and the other interferes with the passenger’s knee. The infotainment rotary dial sits low and behind the gear lever, where some with longer limbs will have to bend their wrists and elbows to reach it. While we like the simple menu structure, this system complicates programming radio stations, and we can’t find a screen that allows you to easily switch between radio stations. The seats have a design that uses fabric suspension instead of springs and foam. It’s comfortable, but not as supportive as the best sports seats on the market. Anyway,
