Based on US EPA test cycles, Mazda says the CX-9 is now the most efficient car in its class, including the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Hyundai Santa Fe and Nissan Pathfinder.
The new 2.5-liter turbo engine is largely based on the naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5 already in service. The mill is equipped with the world’s best technology called the Mazda Dynamic Pressure Turbo system, which can adjust the amount of exhaust gas intake depending on the engine speed. The system can direct the engine’s exhaust gases to the turbocharged turbine through smaller ports at lower revs.
Based on 93-octane gasoline in the US, the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 250 hp. at 5000 rpm and 420 Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. Based on 87-octane, the power is reduced to 227 hp. Mazda hasn’t yet released performance figures for its CX-9 with this engine, but it says it offers easy acceleration and plenty of torque, negating the need to dig through the Skyactiv-Drive six-speed torque converter automatic for acceleration.
The engine also features an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system that prevents excess fuel from being burned when the engine is running at high temperatures. Starting at the standard 500 degrees Celsius, the exhaust gas recirculation system can reduce the temperature to 100 degrees Celsius, allowing the 2.5T to run with a 10:5:1 compression ratio.

Mazda has also introduced its new i-Activ AWD system, which first appeared in the CX-5, in its latest CX-9. The system, which previously only had 10 sensors to monitor road conditions and adjust the torque distribution accordingly, has been upgraded to 27 sensors and can send up to 50% of the engine’s torque directly to the rear wheels.
The new CX-9 sheds light on the previous Ford architecture and gets a new 55mm longer wheelbase that now stands at 2,930mm, effectively increasing legroom in the cabin and for entry and exit for rear passengers.
The length of the new CX-9 is also slightly shorter than its predecessor at 5,065 mm, and it is also 30 mm narrower at 1,900 mm in width. The car’s body also has shorter overhangs: 59 mm at the front and 25 mm at the rear.
Overall, Mazda says its new CX-9 has shed up to 90kg in front-wheel-drive variants and up to 130kg in all-wheel-drive versions compared to its predecessor.

Inside, Mazda has completely redesigned the CX-9’s interior, featuring what the automaker calls the Heads-Up Cockpit, with a vertically positioned center console and instrument panel that works to keep the driver’s eyes level with the road.

There is a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with a three-spoke instrument panel at the back. The two instrument panels have analog dials and the upper one has a 4.6-inch full-color TFT display.
