The 2.5 liter delivers tremendous acceleration both from a standstill and on the move. Passing on the highway requires a bit of planning. The cab is very driver-centric, with excellent visibility and a good driving position (the small center console and wide clearance between the brake and dead pedal are helpful for tall drivers). It also has less space than some competitors, making it a bit friendlier for rear seat passengers.

All controls are under the driver’s control. The center display loses touchscreen functionality when the car is in motion (controlled by easy-to-use buttons near the shifter) and doesn’t wash out in sunlight. The driver’s armrest is not high enough to rest your elbows on the steering wheel.

The step height is a couple of inches higher than most cars in this segment, but most people will find it easy to get into the CX-5. High doors mean you don’t have to duck down. Getting off is also easy. But taller front seat passengers may have to rush to get out, and rear seat passengers may have to wrestle to get out.

The driver’s seat is vertically adjustable from low backrest (for crossovers) to high roof. The front of the seat post is raised very high, providing ample support on long rides. The steering wheel also offers a wide range of tilt and telescope adjustments.

Even with the hatch in place, the CX-5 feels spacious up front, with plenty of room for tall people. Rear-seat passengers may feel cramped due to the sculpted outer seats, which can make it difficult for adults to sit in the middle. Rear leg space is a bit narrow.

The cargo area is slightly smaller for the class, but it still offers the capacity you’d expect from a crossover. When the remote lock is unlocked, the rear seats lie almost flat. The cargo cover is cleverly attached to the hatch so you don’t have to bend down to load anything inside. The seats fold 40/20/40.

Spacious water bottle pockets on all doors provide plenty of storage space. The center box is deep but not wide, and there is an auxiliary box in front of the shifter for additional storage. Inside the rear strap is a shallow tray with a USB port.

The cargo area is slightly smaller than competitors, but we were able to fit two large suitcases without impeding rear visibility. The load height is slightly higher than many in its class, as are the door openings.
