Getting in and out isn’t too difficult, though, and the seats are very comfortable thanks to a clever mesh suspension design that ditches traditional seat springs to save weight. Material quality has improved significantly this generation, especially in Club and Grand Touring trims, with upgraded trim panels on the doors, dash and console. Sports buyers can get a more basic finish, but the cabin is very good for the price.
The MX-5’s controls are logically arranged around the driver, and we’re happy to report that USB connectivity and Bluetooth (phone and audio) are now standard on the base Sport trim as well. Other trims have a beautiful touchscreen interface with intuitive menus and sharp color graphics; if you want to shift gears yourself, that’s only mitigated by the usefully redundant control knob on the console.

The manual convertible top is very easy to use. Experienced operators can reverse the driver’s seat in a simple movement over the shoulder without leaving the driver’s seat, and raising it requires little extra effort. However, the trunk is quite modest at just 4.6 cubic feet. It’s small even by roadster standards. For context, the cargo bay is three times the size of a typical family sedan.
