The CX-5 is a huge win for Mazda, a company that often struggles to attract customers who shop for other brands. The CX-5’s combination of good looks, generous interior space, plenty of room and driving dynamics resonated with people looking for a compact crossover SUV. If there was one area that could have been improved, it was under the hood.
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 solves this problem. Last year’s 2.0-liter “Skyactiv” four-cylinder engine was strong in fuel delivery but weak in power and was only available on Sport models. The Touring and Grand Touring trims come with larger versions of that engine, displacing 2.5 liters and producing 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Not just 29 or 35, respectively, over 2.0 liters, but one of the most powerful non-turbo four-cylinder engines in the segment. After all, fuel economy drops slightly.
Beyond that, the CX-5’s aesthetics remain unchanged for 2014. It’s still a lot of fun to drive small SUVs, proving once again that Mazda senses don’t have to be dull. The CX-5’s cabin isn’t the most visually dynamic, but it comes with most of the extras we’ve come to expect from small crossovers. Some of them are controlled by the touchscreen, which is not a popular interface, but we think most of them will find the CX-5’s controls simple and intuitive.

Of course, there are many other candidates to consider. The Ford Escape offers usable turbo power and a more attractive interior, the Honda CR-V is a more useful choice, and the 2014 Subaru Forester has strong off-road capabilities. Still, the 2014 Mazda CX-5 deserves serious consideration. It may be very generic in concept, but it is certainly unique in its execution.
The 2014 Mazda CX-5 Sport is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Customers are offered a choice of front or all-wheel drive. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic transmission is optional.
In performance testing, the all-wheel-drive CX-5 with this engine went from zero to 60 mph in 9.7 seconds, which is about average for a small crossover. EPA fuel economy is 29 mpg (26 mpg city / 32 mpg highway) with front-wheel drive and the automatic and 29 mpg combined (26 mpg city / 35 mpg highway) with the manual. With all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, the rating drops to 28 mpg (25 mpg city / 31 mpg highway).
The CX-5 Touring and Grand Touring models have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. During testing, the 2.5-liter four-wheel-drive CX-5 sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, some time for the class. Fuel economy ratings are 27 mpg (25 mpg city / 32 mpg highway) with front-wheel drive and 26 mpg combined (24 mpg city / 30 mpg highway) with AWD.

All 2014 Mazda CX-5s come standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, and front and side airbags. An automatic collision warning feature is optional as standard on the Sport and Touring and Grand Touring, which also includes a blind spot warning system.
The optional Smart City Brake Support system uses laser sensors to detect stationary objects such as parked cars or pedestrians in front of the vehicle at speeds up to 29 mph. If the driver does not respond to the warning, the car can automatically apply the brakes.
In brake testing, the CX-5 Grand Touring stopped in 121 feet from 60 mph, which is slightly better than the class average.
In government crash tests, the CX-5 earned a perfect five stars for crash protection, five stars for front and side crash protection. In crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the CX-5 received top ratings of “Good” in moderate frontal offset, small frontal offset, side impact and roof strength tests. Its seat/headrest design is rated “Good” for rear impact protection.

The driving style of the 2014 Mazda CX-5 is a departure from the typical cheap SUV. Brakes, suspension and handling are exceptional, and the CX-5 is generally very comfortable and confident on twisty roads. On the open highway, the CX-5 isn’t the quietest choice, but it still handles well.
The base engine offers competitive acceleration on paper, but in practice it always makes the CX-5 Sport feel a step behind its rivals. Sure, it has plenty of power, but we think the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine would be a better choice due to its high power and low fuel consumption. Regardless of the engine, the six-speed automatic transmission shifts gears quickly and smoothly. For those who enjoy a more controlled ride (and better fuel economy), we’re happy to offer a manual transmission in the Mazda Sport.
The CX-5 cockpit, regardless of height, is attractive, modern and functional. It’s a serious look (some might say understated) but at least it’s not covered in nasty fake wood or overly visible chrome trim. The smooth dial comes with limited use of satin metallic details, and the black dial with white text is very clear. TomTom’s navigation system is satisfactory, but many competing units are faster, more intuitive, and have better graphics. The touchscreen audio system interface is fine too.
Both the driving position and the comfort of the front seats are excellent. Although the rear seats are spacious for this type (especially in terms of legroom) and a bit flat to sit on, the Touring and Grand Touring have an innovative folding technique that lowers the bottom of the front seats. Seat up to provide a nearly flat load. With all seats in place, cargo space is 34 cubic feet, which expands to a competitive 65 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

The Touring adds Sport trim and a more powerful engine, a reversing camera, a blind spot warning system, a six-way power driver’s seat, 40/20/40 split rear seats, updated cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and six speakers. A moonroof and Bose audio package adds a moonroof and a nine-speaker Bose sound system.
The Grand Touring includes all of the above, plus 19-inch wheels, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power driver’s seat adjustment, heated front seats and leather upholstery.

The technology package available on Touring and Grand Touring models includes a Smart City Brake Support System (see Safety section), automatic and adaptive bi-xenon headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, satellite radio and a TomTom-powered navigation system. The last two items are available as personal preferences. The model version of this package has automatic wipers, while the Grand Touring version lacks keyless entry/entry.
Traded in a ’11 Ford Escape Limited AWD for a ’14 Mazda CX-5 GT in September 2013 after 4 months of use. Overall, a good car. Pickup is good, comparable to the V6 in the Escape. Mileage is good, although not as good as some are reporting here. It averages 23-24 mpg in the city. However, in cold winters, mileage dropped to 20-21 mpg. Extended use for 10 minutes in extreme cold, … reduced mileage to 18-19. The sound system is good, but not great
