When I was searching Amazon the other day for something completely unrelated to the automotive industry, they came up with this suggested article that immediately caught my eye:

Yes, the holy grail of the 3rd generation head unit mounts… a double DIN bezel with an integrated button… and the outer flange covers the “Mickey Mouse” ears left over from the original factory radio buttons. Blah blah blah Weedahoe, factory NAV frame, etc. For less than $18 it solves the big problem of why I never upgraded the OEM stereo (I lost the box) and even comes with a disposable cutting template to show how much needs to be removed from the factory frame to fit it. hole:

I still don’t have it 100% square and I broke the thin top bar testing it in place. Since I bought this frame in preparation to test some setup ideas I have, I was already planning to order another one. I still have work to do and I’m waiting for my cordless Dremel to charge for the third time so I can finish.

As far as ideas for testing the installation, one thing I’m looking at is drilling a small hole through the back of the new cube that will hold the Apple Lightning cable in place so I can slide my iPhone into the bottom first and it will be automatic. besides (I’m fed up with loose plugs and cables!) Another thing I’m thinking about is hacking a wireless charger and mounting inductive coils under the wireless charging cube on my iPhone X if I decide to get one. I can also permanently mount the A/V connectors and a couple of USB charging ports that feed through the back of the case, in case I need to run a portable video player or the like.

My next decision is what to do with the 1970s faux wood trim on the OEM frame. I’m the world’s worst spray painter and there are some intricate details from the toe tabs to the vents that I don’t think vinyl will cover well. I was thinking of flat black Plasti Dip with the new radio bezel. Looking at the picture above, I think dark gray might be the way to go. I am not a fan of bright colors on the dashboard because of their effect on my daytime vision, so silver and bright colors are not available. I like how the new radio bezel is an extension of the black plate that holds the heater buttons, so I’m leaning towards the dark gray over the faux wood. It should also work well on faux wood door accents since the 1970s are looking to bring those pieces back.

I will post more pictures when my new head unit arrives on Tuesday. Alpine iLX-107 with wireless Apple CarPlay, in case anyone is curious…..

I’m very interested in how this turns out and would definitely like to wear it myself one day. Thanks for sharing!

Car Stereo Radio Double Din Install Dash Kit Fits 2002 2003 2004 2005 Dodge Ram

My usually punctual postman was late today with the last piece of this puzzle (steering wheel controls with no after sales service) so I was able to get everything enough to drive. The wiring kit was simple enough that even someone with only seven working fingers could put it together. Notice the creative use of the cardboard box

Looking at the layout without the factory installed center console, I’m half tempted to build my own replacement console one of these days to make better use of the available space.

I put the control panel back temporarily so I could do some work late this afternoon. The radio is a bit high so I’ll have to open the dash again and play with the screw holes to find some slack to get it down and out by a hair:

I had the spare remote mounted on the steering wheel when it came in, but I haven’t had a chance to connect the receiver to the remote yet before it gets dark outside. Tomorrow is a new day…..

Since my truck didn’t have the factory buttons on the rear remote and to install it on a CAN truck I would have to mess with the air bag clock spring and go to the dealer to code the extra feature, I gave up another $31. and I got one of these from Amazon:

Unfortunately, it was only intended for use on Android-based head units that allow reprogramming of the steering wheel buttons, not on radios from major stereo manufacturers. Enter the $24 PAC SWI-RC “universal” steering wheel control box with 4 possible wires and 15 different vehicle codes to try one by one. (Their documentation only covers connecting the factory buttons, but not the two-wire remote for the Android head unit.) For anyone else trying this, the magic combination is to tie the two “key” wires from the remote receiver together with the white wire. on the SWI-RC using vehicle mode #3 and most importantly pulling the slide switch all the way on the remote receiver box to activate the 3.3 volt mode (contrary to the SWI-RC documentation that the white wire is for 5.0 volt controls ). If you do not pull the switch on the receiver, the volume down, down arrow and volume buttons will not be programmed.

For anyone else without factory steering wheel controls considering upgrading to an aftermarket name brand head unit, this $55 setup should work for any stereo name supported by the PAC SWI-RC adapter box. .

Interesting, I completely missed this thread before. Always wanted to upgrade the stereo in the ’07 and really need it in the 03 as it really lacks an AUX port.

The plastic side mounting brackets included with this frame kit caused the Alpine head to sit about 2mm too high, so I cut the bottom of the mounting screw holes in the brackets to make the bracket higher on the radio (so the radio should be lower):

The closest tool at the time was a pair of small wire cutters, but a small file, dremel tool or even a razor blade would probably be neater.

Here is the finished frame. It looks worse in person, but I can always peel off the Plasti Dip and start over at any time. There are three loose layers of gray Plasti Dip plastic paint, followed by a magical layer of Plasti Dip smoke foil:

I tried to have it textured like the other interior panels and the smoke layer on top added black dots that add depth to the finish. Looking at the picture, I think I might try black in the vent frame openings as it seems to complement the frame of the main unit better.

Here’s the remote control. The mount actually slid under my heated steering wheel cover with little effort:

I haven’t found a Cummins logo background that I like. If anyone has the PhotoShop skills to make one like this with a honeycomb background, I’d love to give the file a good home in my truckā€¦
