In the two years since I drove the first Polestar-engined S60, Volvo has only changed one thing: the brakes. But this small change seems to make a big difference. With this important piece of the performance puzzle solved, the Polestar S60 engine is finally perfectly realized in the sports chair it always wanted to be.

Hate is never a problem; A big six-piston Brembo engine provided impressive power in front of the cabin. But electronically programmed by the wire – a broken pedal sends a computer signal that tells the driver what to do – it turned out badly. Volvo has tweaked the software and made some minor hardware changes, resulting in a brake experience that not only provides better feedback to drivers, but also makes the transition between regenerative and mechanical brakes the S60 very smooth.

With the dampers engaging somewhere between medium and medium well, the Polestar S60 engine delivers a compliant ride. The steering wheel has a good weight action, but feels a little numb in the middle, but the wheel is at least a pleasure, wrapped in leather and just the right size. The 235/40-inch Premium Continental Contact 6 tires provide plenty of grip, but have enough sidewall to keep the 19-inch wheels from punishing. And hey, since the brakes are no longer washers, you can get more speed into the corners by knowing how much pressure you’re applying.
