Solar calculators have been such an integral part of math education since the mid-1980s that they require few surprises or miracles these days, even though a predominantly solar-powered future is still decades away, if it ever happens.

So why did solar energy end up in calculators long before it appeared in everyday life elsewhere, and why is solar energy still so innovative today when we see it in homes, parks, and trash can/Wi-Fi router combinations?

The first solar calculator came onto the market in 1976. The Sharp EL-8026 – also called “Sun Man” – combined two jointly developed technologies. Old calculators from the early 1960s were heavy and expensive desktop calculators (costing thousands of dollars by today’s standards). But with the rapid development of transistors and powerful LCD screens, they quickly became pocket-sized devices that only required a single processor chip.

Released in 1978, the Teal Photon (left) was the first calculator to be powered entirely by solar energy. Unlike the new version, it requires bright light to work (note the filter that protects the screen from excessive light). The Photon follows the Sharp EL-8026, which was released two years ago. It has an internal battery that can be charged via a solar panel on the back.

Meanwhile, advances in manufacturing have made solar panels – first developed at Bell Labs in the mid-1950s – cheap and efficient enough to be used in devices other than satellites. Plugging it into a calculator showed how cheaply the panels could be made and how little power was needed to run the processor.

“When Texas Instruments wanted to bring a new transistor to market, they chose radio as their first blockbuster application,” said Jörg Werner, who runs the online Datamath Calculator Museum.

The hour of maximum solar radiation, also called the hour of maximum solar radiation, is a measure of how much sunlight a location receives.

The maximum hour of sunshine is defined as the time when the intensity of sunlight (solar radiation) averages 1,000 watts per square meter. Anyone who knows little about electricity may know that this is equivalent to 1,000 watt hours (or 1 kilowatt hour) of sunlight per square meter.

Using historical data, we can estimate how much sunlight the location is likely to receive per day. Then we can display this value in the hours of maximum solar radiation.
