The national average price of gasoline has risen nearly $2 over the past year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That’s not good news for some of the thirstiest vehicles on the road: pickup trucks. But if you’re looking to save gas, there’s a relatively new option: the hybrid pickup truck.

Like other hybrid vehicles, these trucks have a gasoline engine supplemented by electric motors and a battery to improve fuel economy. But the hybrid systems of each car manufacturer have their own nuances. The experts at Edmunds take a look at all four hybrid trucks on sale today to help you decide which is the best buy. All prices below include postage. FORD F-150 POWERBOOST

Toyota Is Building An All Electric Pickup Truck Soon, And This Could Be It

PowerBoost is the name given to the world’s first hybrid engine in the F-150, and rightly so. It makes more power than any non-hybrid F-150 except the off-road-focused Raptor: 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. It’s 3 to 5 mpg more efficient than a comparable non-hybrid F-150 and, when properly equipped, can tow more than 12,000 pounds, which is plenty for the average truck owner.

The PowerBoost engine also has the convenient Pro Power Onboard feature. This is a built-in power generator that allows you to power a variety of power tools and even large household appliances like a TV or microwave oven. The PowerBoost transmission is available on every F-150 SuperCrew cab trim. On the other hand, adding it to a truck can cost up to $4,495. But overall, the gains in efficiency and productivity are impressive. However, you may need to adjust your driving style, as we found in our testing that the EPA numbers hardly match up in the real world. However, the F-150 is currently Edmunds’ highest-rated full-size truck.

The 2022 Tundra redesign modernizes the aging truck in many ways and introduces an all-new i-Force Max hybrid engine. It’s the most powerful hybrid truck on this list, with 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, but it’s slightly less efficient than the F-150 PowerBoost. The hybrid drivetrain is only 1-2 mpg more efficient than the Tundra’s regular engine.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid: 5 Things We Love About It (and 3 Things We Hate)

Toyota only offers the hybrid engine on the Tundra Limited and up, plus it must be equipped with the CrewMax cab, making it a fairly expensive option. But like the F-150 Hybrid, it offers a respectable towing capacity of over 11,000 pounds. All Tundra Hybrid models come with a large 14-inch touchscreen and heated and ventilated leather front and rear seats.

There’s a lot to like about the curvaceous Tundra. But know that it doesn’t lead or beat others in towing, comfort, efficiency, or any major truck category.

The Ram 1500 eTorque is the only mild hybrid system on this list. Ram offers it with both V6 and V8 engines and in any trim level. The eTorque system does not increase the total power output of any engine, but rather adds short bursts of extra power when the engine needs it most and smoothes out the engine’s brake-start system. Most importantly, it improves fuel economy by 2-3 mpg compared to Ram’s non-hybrid gas engines.

Surprisingly, there’s no extra cost for eTorque on the V8, but it’s standard on the V6. The Ram 1500 is currently Edmunds’ No. 2 rated full-size truck. It’s the most comfortable truck in its class, and its mild hybrid drivetrain works like silk.

The Maverick is an all-new compact truck that comes standard with a 191-horsepower hybrid powertrain. It’s the most efficient truck on the market today, as efficient as a small hybrid SUV. However, the hybrid engine is only available with front-wheel drive, so if you plan to use it off-road or live in a cold climate, you may want to reconsider your decision.

Plus, the little Maverick has a low starting price, about the same as a compact car, making it the most affordable truck you can buy. It can tow as much as a regular small SUV and has a payload of 1,500 pounds.
