Measure Battery Capacity With Multimeter – You want to use your 12V battery to power something, but you have no idea how charged it is. How do you check?
There are several different ways to check the remaining capacity (i.e. state of charge) of a 12V battery. But some methods are much more accurate than others.
Measure Battery Capacity With Multimeter
The remaining capacity of a battery is related to its open circuit voltage, and this relationship can be expressed with a voltage graph or discharge curve. Here is an example voltage diagram for 12V LiFePO4 batteries:

To check the battery capacity with a multimeter, disconnect all loads and chargers from the battery and let it rest for a while. How much? Battery University recommends a minimum of 4 hours. This allows the battery voltage to cool down.
Use a multimeter to measure the open circuit voltage of the battery. Turn the multimeter to DC voltage setting, touch the red probe to the positive battery terminal and the black probe to the negative battery terminal.
Compare the voltage reading to the appropriate battery voltage chart to get an estimate of the battery’s remaining capacity. Refer to our LiFePO4 voltage tables or lead acid voltage tables for this step. Or there may be one in the product manual for the battery.
This method is relatively accurate and takes advantage of using a multimeter, which most 12V electronics enthusiasts already have. The disadvantage is that it is not very accurate; you’ll get a rough read at best.

But it is a very popular way to estimate battery capacity. I often use this method when checking a battery I haven’t used in a while to get a general idea of its charge status.
I want battery monitors. They show the remaining capacity of your 12V-48V battery as a percentage, the same way you can see exactly how much battery is left in your phone. They also show other features such as charging or discharging speed. Some premium battery monitors even have features like Bluetooth so you can monitor your battery from your phone.
It’s best for off-grid solar and mobile electric systems (like a caravan) where your battery bank is constantly connected to loads and chargers. You’ll need to turn everything off to set up the display, but the display will constantly monitor your battery’s charge status.
Battery monitors can be expensive, but they don’t have to be. Now there are budget options that perform basic functions quite well. Check out my review of the best battery monitors, as well as some tips on how to choose the right one.

Note: The battery monitor is supplied with a shunt. There are many inexpensive voltmeters sold on Amazon as “battery monitors”, but unless they have a shunt they are not true battery monitors.
Estimated battery capacity. They work by measuring the voltage of the battery and using this to assess its state of charge.
This is basically the same process I described for using a multimeter, so why is it less accurate? Because voltmeters usually measure voltage while the battery is still connected to loads and chargers. A battery’s voltage rises as it charges and falls as it discharges, so using voltage to measure capacity while the battery is in use will result in much less accurate readings.
In practice, this means that a high current charging rate will increase the battery voltage so that the battery appears more charged than it actually is. A high rate of current discharge, such as powering an energy-intensive device such as a refrigerator or AC unit, reduces the voltage of the battery, making it appear more depleted than it actually is.

If you have an off-grid solar system, your solar charge controller can provide a rough estimate of battery capacity. How does he do this? You guessed it; Depends on battery voltage.
The charge controller has no idea what the length or size of the wires connecting it to the battery are, so it cannot accurately account for voltage drop. Some charge controllers have a compatible battery voltage sensor that you can purchase that helps the controller get an accurate voltage reading. However, this method does not solve any of the other problems.

To start, let’s measure the voltage of the AA battery: connect the black probe to COM and the red probe to mAVΩ. Set the multimeter to “2V” in the DC range. Almost all portable electronics use direct current, not alternating current. Connect the black probe to the battery terminal or ‘-‘ and the red probe to the power supply terminal or ‘+’. Clamp the probes by applying light pressure to the positive and negative terminals of the AA battery. If you have a new battery, you should see about 1.5V on the screen (this battery is brand new so its voltage is slightly higher than 1.5V).
If you’re measuring DC voltage (like a battery or a sensor connected to the Arduino), you’ll place the knob where V has a straight line. AC voltage (like coming out of the wall) can be dangerous, so we should rarely use the AC voltage setting (V with a squiggle next to it). If you’re dealing with AC power, we recommend getting a non-contact tester instead of using a digital multimeter.

What happens if you swap red and black probes? The multimeter reading is simply negative. Nothing bad happens! The multimeter measures the voltage on the common probe. How much voltage is on the “+” end of the battery compared to the common or negative pin? 1.5 V. If we switch probes, we define “+” as the common or zero point. How much voltage is there at the “-” point of the battery compared to our new zero? -1.5V!
Now let’s build a simple circuit that shows how to measure voltage in a real world scenario. The circuit is simply 1kΩ and blue super bright LED lamp powered by SparkFun Breadboard Stick for power. First, let’s make sure that the circuit you are working on is properly powered. If your project is supposed to be 5V but it is less than 4.5V or greater than 5.5V, this will quickly give you an indication that something is wrong and you may need to check the electrical plugs or wires in your circuit.
Set the switch to “20V” in the DC range (there is a V with a solid line next to the DC voltage range). Multimeters are generally not automatic. You need to set the multimeter to the range it can measure. For example, 2V measures voltage up to 2 volts and 20V measures voltage up to 20 volts. So if you are measuring a 12V battery, use the 20V setting. 5V system? Use the 20V setting. If you set it incorrectly, you will probably see the meter display change and then read “1”.
Using some force (imagine sticking a fork into a piece of cooked meat), push the probes onto the two exposed pieces of metal. A probe must make contact with the GND connection. One probe for VCC or 5V connection.

We can also test different parts of the circuit. This practice is called node analysis and is the basic building block of circuit analysis. By measuring the voltage in the circuit we can see how much voltage each component requires. Let’s measure the entire circuit first. By measuring where the voltage goes to the resistor and then where the LED ground is we should see the full circuit voltage which is expected to be around 5V.
We can then see how much voltage the LED uses. This is called the voltage drop across the LED. Don’t be afraid if it doesn’t make sense now. You will explore the world of electronics more. The important thing is that different parts of the circuit can be measured to analyze the circuit as a whole.
