This little crossover is unexpectedly luxurious, especially in the top-end Signature trim, which is more luxurious than anything else in its class.

Mazda Cx 5 Review, For Sale, Colours, Interior, Models & News

What is most important in a utility vehicle? Do you only care about interior versatility and passenger comfort, or do you want things like evocative design, luxurious materials and inspiring performance? If those last items are at the top of your shopping list, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 is probably the best small SUV for you. Rival offerings in this segment may tick some of these boxes, but for the most part they have more in common with a toaster than anything that will really excite drivers.

Far from a new small crossover, but it sure is beautiful. Like the larger three-row Mazda CX-9, this utility vehicle features sleek styling, including a wide, smiling grille, clean sides and a sharp rear end. It’s one of the simpler models in its crowded vehicle segment, which includes rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape.

To reinforce its sophisticated look, my tester was fitted with 19-inch wheels with a dark gray finish. They fill the wheel wells of the body very well and do not reduce road refinement. Unfortunately, the underside of this CX-5 is coated in black plastic cladding, which looks completely out of place on such a sleekly styled machine.

Appealing to a wide range of customers, the CX-5 is offered in five trim levels. There’s Sport, Touring and Grand Touring, as well as Grand Touring Reserve and Signature. For added appeal, all-wheel drive is offered across the lineup, but it’s standard on both top models.

Mazda builds some of the best conventional interiors in the business. Across its product range, the cabins of this Japanese brand are often better than what you’ll find in competing vehicles.

The interior of my pompous CX-5 pampers passengers with luxurious appointments. The seats are covered in nappa leather, which is soft to the touch. There is real wood trim on the door panels and dashboard. Contrast stitching livens things up, and where there’s plastic, most parts are smooth and attractively grained.

To justify the extra cost, Signature models like my tester also include a comfortable eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. Both front seats are heated and ventilated, a touch of luxury. Even if the weather is too cold to evaluate the ventilation function, clicking on the heaters quickly removes the winter chill. A standard head-up display keeps the captain well informed, and traffic sign recognition ensures he knows what the speed limit is, although it’s not always 100% accurate.

Despite its impressive features, the CX-5 is not the most practical vehicle in its class. When it comes to carrying passengers, rear seat legroom is disappointingly tight. With the driver’s bed adjusted to my liking, there’s barely any knee room for the rear passenger, at least there’s plenty of headroom. The outer seats are heated and you have a couple of USB ports in the center armrest.

As for cargo space, the CX-5 offers 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seat. Fold down the 40:20:40 split seatback, which you can do effortlessly by pulling a pair of small levers in the hold, and that number grows to 59.6 cubic feet. While adequate, the CX-5 is significantly less capable than the CR-V, offering 39.2 cubes of storage space behind the second-row seat and 75.8 in the backrest. The Ford Escape also has more cargo space.

There’s a lot of substance behind the CX-5’s pretty face. Mazda’s suite of i-Activsense safety features is standard across the range. It includes advanced driver aids such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. All these things seem to work well. None of these exhibited bad behavior during my tests.

In addition to all of this, push-button start, rain-sensing windshield wipers and keyless entry are included in all versions of the CX-5. These were luxury car amenities just a few years ago, and here they are, standard fare on a mass-market crossover.

To set my Signature-trim tester apart from the more functional CX-5s is that it has heated and power-folding side mirrors, always a useful feature. There’s also a windshield wiper defroster, which is a godsend in the winter.

An 8-inch color touch screen on this vehicle’s dashboard houses the massive Mazda Connect infotainment system. With amateurish graphics and a confusing user interface, it’s one of my least favorite multimedia systems currently available. The home screen icons look like they were designed by a toy company intern. The graphics are bright and shiny, at least a decade out of date. But dig a little deeper and the look of this system is far from attractive, the usability is sometimes ugly. For example, changing radio presets is an exercise in frustration on several levels. The rest of the CX-5 is so beautiful and well thought out that it’s puzzling why its infotainment technology is so lagging behind. Fortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, so there’s no need to use what the automaker offers out of the box.

Matching its sophisticated appearance, the CX-5 offers a very refined driving experience. For 2020, engineers have worked to improve noise, vibration and hardness characteristics. For the most part, they succeeded.

Under way, this Mazda’s interior remains quiet and the ride is surprisingly supple, even when riding on generously-sized 19-inch wheels, with little to no road harshness inside. Lower versions of the CX-5 are smaller thanks to their smaller 17-inch wheels. Still, there’s no sensitivity or harshness in the way my CX-5 tester absorbs bumps. Simply put, this crossover behaves like a larger, more expensive vehicle.

Likewise, the steering is well weighted, with a sharpness not typically found in popular utility vehicles. While not very telepathic, this Mazda steering wheel is still rewarding to use. Take the CX-5 around some of your favorite corners and it will prove to be a willing dance partner. While the suspension is supple enough to provide some roll when cornering, it doesn’t mind being pushed around. Another thing any offense has a handle on is the Husky’s A pillars. The two front roof racks are beautiful, which significantly reduces outward visibility at oblique angles.

Mazda Cx 5 Signature Review: Turbo Torque Stirs The Soul (red Crystal)

Also helping to improve handling is Mazda’s so-called G-Vectoring Control. Subtly reducing engine power when the steering wheel is turned. This prevents the vehicle’s weight from shifting rearward, meaning more pressure is placed on the front tires for better feel and control. I didn’t notice anything during my time behind the wheel of the CX-5, but that’s the point. It is designed to be perfect and helps to provide light and precise handling.

Two engines are available in the Mazda CX-5. The top-level offering that powered my tester was a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that was standard equipment on Grand Touring Reserve and Signature models. Fill the tank with 93-octane gas and this engine will give you 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque, up 10 from last year. Don’t worry, it runs fine on regular fuel, though output has dropped slightly to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft.

This turbo engine makes this crossover fast enough, filling it with plenty of torque throughout the operating range, so there’s no need to step on the gas to get going. Helping to deliver this respectable performance is a voluntary transmission. On paper, the CX-5’s gearbox is behind the times, with only six forward speeds. These days, transmissions in few other vehicles have eight, nine or even 10 ratios, making this Mazda feel positively primitive. Fortunately, there is nothing wrong with the performance of this gearbox. Upshifts and downshifts are silky smooth and it’s willing to drop ratios as needed, making it quite responsive.

If there’s a problem with the CX-5’s drivetrain, it’s, oddly enough, refinement. It’s hard to argue with the performance of this engine, but it’s louder and harsher than I’d like. This engine isn’t afraid to let you know it’s running and emit some unwanted vibrations. No, it’s not excessive, but the rest of the CX-5 is so well thought out and refined that this hum is especially noticeable.
