Mazda Cx 5 All Black – Of all Mazda’s offerings at the moment, the CX-5 is the compact sport utility vehicle leading the way. Not only does it find more new owners than any other SUV from the company, it also outsells all Mazda vehicles combined.

Good looking, good driver and comfortable with five seats. I’ve had a few rough edges with it, but overall it’s a contender in a crowded class full of great vehicles.

The CX-5 starts at $28,500 for the front-wheel drive GX and $30,000 for the all-wheel drive. The next step up, the GS, comes in both, but the next six trims range from the GS Comfort to the 100.

I had the new 2021 model, the Kuro Edition, which is basically an appearance package placed on the GS Comfort. Available only in gray or black with 19-inch black wheels. The interior features red leather seats, black honeycomb upholstery, red accent stitching, a 10-way power driver’s seat with memory and a 6-way power front passenger seat. It’s $36,400 before freight and taxes, $1,800 more than the GS Comfort.

A third option is the turbocharged version, which is optional on the GT and standard on the Signature and 100 models.

Not great, but it was fair.

The CX-5’s all-wheel-drive system primarily drives the front wheels, but always sends some power to the rear wheels. From there, a suite of sensors monitors a number of factors, including steering wheel angle, speed, ambient temperature and whether the wipers are on, so traction can be sent back almost instantly.

Mazda has always been picky about handling, and the CX-5 has responsive steering, a tight turning circle and smooth handling when cornering and turning. It’s not a segment where the Sportif enters the market as a surprise, but the steering isn’t overly soft, but it does instill more confidence when it’s lively.

The infotainment system is a tablet on the dash, and most functions are touch-sensitive, but controlled by a joystick on the center console. It does what it’s supposed to do, but it can be a bit awkward if you want to quickly switch between screen functions. Only GT and higher models have hard buttons for audio and home page as well as navigation except for maps. If you want this button to appear on the bottom pad navigation, the SD card will cost $475 from the dealer to enable it. If you want to go the hardware route, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on all models, with CarPlay available wirelessly on the GT and above.

The CX-5 has a lot of competition and has a lot going for it. I recommend buying it over the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape, and Honda CR-V. But definitely put this Mazda on your list because it deserves everyone’s attention.
