Mazda Cx 5 2016 Review – The Mazda CX-5 is the first vehicle to fully adopt the brand’s next-generation design language, known as KODO – Soul of Motion, and takes full advantage of every aspect of SKYACTIV technology when it launches for the 2013 model year.

Road Test Review

After three years of consistent sales growth, Mazda has made some major improvements to the CX-5 for 2016. The front gets a facelift with a new and improved grille, while the rear gets some different taillights. The front suspension has been retuned for improved performance, the interior is more insulated, and an electronic handbrake has been added (sorry winter parking lot drifters).

The most significant improvements for 2016 actually appear inside the car. The outdated climate controls have been replaced with more modern buttons, and the red digital display is gone, replaced by a new, easy-to-see white readout.

The infotainment system now includes a seven-inch touchscreen on all but the base GX trim without the convenience package. The system is the easiest to use in the industry, as you have the option to control it via the touchscreen or via perfectly placed dials (called HMI Commander switches) and buttons on the center console.

The base CX-5, called the GX, comes in front-wheel-drive configuration and is powered by a 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Interestingly, you don’t always see manual transmission options in crossovers these days. However, if you opt for all-wheel drive, the manual option isn’t available.

Air conditioning, keyless entry, power windows, push-button start and cruise control are all standard, although as I said before you’ll want the HMI command interface and touchscreen convenience package. You also get Bluetooth controls on the steering wheel, a 7-inch display, HD radio, and 17-inch wheels. I highly recommend it for $1,900.

Next up is the GS, which has a larger 2.5-liter engine that produces 184 horsepower and more features than the GX. These features include a power sunroof, rearview camera, heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, fog lights, remote rear seatback folding and an anti-theft system. You can save $2,000 by putting the GS in front-wheel-drive configuration.

Finally, we have the GT model, which is all-wheel drive only and adds more features like leather, 19-inch wheels, a Bose sound system, dual-zone climate control, navigation, LED headlights, and fog lights. The GT also unlocks the Technology Pack with a number of safety features such as smart braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward obstacle warning and smart high beams.

Of the three engines available in the Mazda CX-5, the most fuel-efficient is the only diesel, a turbocharged 2.2-litre four-cylinder that consumes 5.7L/100km on the official test cycle (city and country combined).

Diesel is also a sweet performer. One of the main reasons you shouldn’t choose it is that diesel is only available on four-wheel drive vehicles, and choosing diesel over petrol will significantly increase the price of the car. The cheapest version, the CX-5 Maxx, is not available with a diesel engine.

The most fuel-efficient of the two petrol engines is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder found in the all-front-wheel-drive CX-5, delivering 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers in official testing. The CX-5’s engine is very close to the Mazda3 hatchback’s 2.0-liter, but it feels slightly quieter and needs more power to get decent acceleration.

The AWD CX-5’s optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine feels brighter and more muscular. In official testing, fuel consumption was around 7.3L/100km. In real-world terms, the CX-5 GT averaged 10.2L/100km on 2.5-octane petrol compared to four popular mid-size SUVs tested in the November 2015 issue of Wheels magazine. This makes the Mazda the most fuel-efficient of the four cars reviewed.

Only the CX-5 Maxx offers a choice of front-wheel-drive six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. In every other CX-5, a six-speed automatic is your only option.

The cheapest CX-5 Maxx has cloth-trimmed seats and 17-inch steel wheels.

Spend more money on the Maxx Sport and you get wheels that are the same size but made from aluminum alloy, look better, and are often lighter. The Maxx Sport also comes with satellite navigation and dual-zone air conditioning (allowing the driver and passenger to set the temperature independently). The headlights automatically turn on when it gets dark, and the windshield wipers automatically work when it rains. The steering wheel and gear knob are both finished in leather.

The CX-5 Grand Touring (or GT) rides on 19-inch alloy wheels and lower-profile tires, which make steering response a little quicker on hard surfaces. The GT comes with a power sunroof, leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats with heating. Bright bi-xenon headlights turn their beams to illuminate corners. A Bose sound system plays music through nine speakers. There are parking sensors at the front and rear and automatic braking when reversing.
