Evenflo Safemax Infant Car Seat Safety Ratings – Limit: 5 to 40 lbs. On the back, 22 to 65 lbs. Forward facing, 40 to 12o lbs. Belt position booster and backless booster.

Comments: Evenflow has moved aggressively into “all-in-one” seats in recent years. These seats combine convertible (forward and rear facing) seats with seat belt boosters designed to handle up to 120 lbs. Evenflow’s first stab at this was with Symphony, which debuted in 2008 but is still for sale.

Example: the new “SafeZone” headrest with strong side impact protection. Also new is Evenflow’s ParentLink Premier service, which offers live video chat with a car seat expert to guide you through any installation questions.

This can be useful when converting the seat from convertible to booster mode. More than one reader told us how frustrating/complicated this can be as you have to remove the seat cushion and make several adjustments to the seat.

(We should point out that Evenflo uses the “SafeMax” name on their line, which is confusing. There are SafeMax infant car seats, SafeMax convertible boosters, and more. The seat we’re referring to here is the EvenFlow SafeMax All-in.)

As usual, Evenflo makes the SafeMax in several versions, including the Platinum SafeMax, which has upgraded fabrics with “Outlast Performance” technology. It is meant to keep babies cool in summer and warm in winter. We’ve heard mixed reviews about the durability of the Outlast fabric, with some readers saying it wears out after a year of use. Also: Outlast claims are hard to verify as accurate or just marketing hype.

Speaking of hype, Evenflow claims that SafeMax seats are “rollover tested” for safety. As we’ve discussed elsewhere, it sounds good. . . Additionally, there are no national rollover safety standards for car seats. So evenflow’s security standard – was set by evenflow. There is no way to independently verify the claim that this seat would be safe in a rollover.

Other concerns with this seat: Although the SafeMax has a rear-facing seat belt limit of 40 lbs, you can only use this seat rear-facing with the headrest in the three lowest positions. This means that children will likely outgrow the rear SafeMax 40 lbs. – More for long-term use at the rear.

SafeMax large seat is 22.5 inches wide and 25+ lbs. Fitting other car seats in the back seat with Safemax is a challenge; And the weight means you probably won’t want to move this seat from vehicle to vehicle.

On the plus side, we liked the premium lock, no lap belt, and the overall plushness of the SafeMax. If you take a long car trip, your little girl will be comfortable in this seat. And the Safemax All-in-One is sold in many stores and websites — the lowest price we saw at the time of writing was $251 for the Platinum Safemax at Walmart. That’s a good deal!

Bottom line: Evenflo’s SafeMax is a great seat. Yes, we’re a bit skeptical of the “all-in-one” seat hype – usually these seats compromise somewhere. In the case of the Safemax, the rear will be used extensively, which is not practical in this seat for average-sized children. In the meantime, we’ll give this seat the same rating we gave to Evenflow’s other all-in-one, the Symphony. Grade: B+

But don’t take our word for it: The New York Times called Baby Bargains “The Bible for New Parents!” Baby Bargains has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Good Morning America and NBC’s Today Show. Evenflo’s latest mutlimode car seat has an exciting new feature: It is the first seat to be rollover tested. We had the chance to meet Safemax at a super secret booth during our visit to the Evenflow area at the ABC Kids Expo this fall, so we were excited to spend some quality time with our very own Safemax!

Safemax is basically Evenflow Symphony on steroids. For the most part, we’re fans of the Symphony, but it has one major limitation: a low rear-facing height limit because it can only be used if the top of your child’s head is at least 1 inch below. One of the three lowest headrest positions at the top of the headrest. The SafeMax has the same rear-facing height limit, so even though it is 40 pounds and 40 inches rear-facing, this limit means that most children will not be able to use the SafeMax with an extended rear.

Where the SafeMax shined for my family was in forward-facing mode. My son is very particular about how her car seats feel: she likes a snug fit and the seat has a bit of stretch around her legs. Safemax meets all these criteria!

Safemax is shipped with a lower anchor strap in the forward-facing track. This introduces an extra step to set the seat for rear-facing use. This section describes Safemax models with quick couplings; The Surelatch model has a different setup method. It is described on page 23 of the manual.

To replace the lower anchor strap for the rearward facing harness, remove the infant pillow and pull the cover to expose the strap which is in the forward facing harness.

Move the lower anchor link on each side from the forward-facing track to the rear-facing track. Rotate the belt inside the plastic belt guide so that the belt is flat on the rear belt track.

Once the lower anchor strap was in the way of the rear seat belt, attaching the seat to the car with the SureSafe connectors was a breeze. My car has lower anchor bars built in, so I don’t need to use lower anchor bars. I found that mounting the seat backwards required removing the lower part of the cover and then pulling the tail of the lower anchor straight up through the seat shell.

The front seat was not as big as I expected. In the most reclined position for a newborn, the Safemax takes up about 32 inches of space.

Additional padding can be used (or not used) at any time in back mode. It cannot be used in forward-facing mode at all.

Safemax has two cup holders in the seat. The seat also includes 2 removable cup holders that are dishwasher safe. Our model thought the cup holder was a fun place to store a variety of hair types and little stuffed friends. Note: Cup holder liners are for use in forward facing mode only. The manual is a bit confusing on this subject as the molded cup holders are not removable.

Our newborn doll is 7 pounds and 17 inches long. She fits well in Safemax. With an extra padded headrest, the head is pushed slightly forward. The fit was slightly better with the headrest removed but the body cushion in place.

The manual contains a warning to consult your child’s doctor before using SafeMax for premature babies. We suggest that you contact your child’s doctor. We also note that it is very rare to find a doctor with CPST.

Evenflo Safemax Review

This model is 2 years old, 28 pounds and 36 inches tall. He usually rides in a Chicco Nextfit, so his dad used to let him into the car seat with fairly high sides. His dad noticed that it was a little easier to get this little cutie pie at Safemax than at Nextfit. Our young model loved the seat so much he didn’t want to get out!

My car, a 2016 VW GTI, has a very annoying (yet comfortable for adults not in car seats) seat dip. This makes fitting many car seats a bit of a challenge as it is never clear whether you should place the bottom of the car seat in the drop or above it. Safemax didn’t give me much choice; The base is wide enough to span the sides of this gap in the seat. I was able to install it with less trouble than I expected, but after two it started to come loose
