Quick Spin: 2016 Acura Ilx
– Latest generation Honda Civic. The ILX was last refreshed for the 2016 model year and will receive another refresh in 2019. In other words, the 2019 ILX is a refresh of the previous HEAT model that sold 930 units in September.
To its credit, the ILX’s second change is actually quite significant. It gets a much fresher look, not to mention improved technology and more safety equipment, resulting in better overall value. But, is that enough?
The outgoing ILX wasn’t as attractive in design, but the 2019 model’s updated face is a little more on-road. Everything has been revised from the A-pillar forward, and the ILX now sports the brand’s sharper corporate face first seen on the Acura Precision Concept. A diamond pentagon grille sits front and center, with jewel eye headlights and more trimmed body panels.
Big changes also appear at the rear with a redesigned rear display and LED lights. The license plate moves from the trunk to a new bumper with a prominent diffuser, giving the rear a cleaner and sportier look. From the rear three-quarter view, the ILX is very attractive.
Acura Ilx Hybrid Review
The 2019 ILX gets an optional A-spec styling package that includes a matte graphite grille, dark light housings, side skirt extensions, piano black bumper ridges, a deck spoiler and a redesigned rear diffuser. The package also features a unique set of 18-inch, gray, multi-spoke wheels wrapped in Continental Contipro Contact all-season tires. The A-Spec can be ordered in exclusive Apex Blue Pearl, one of five new ILX color options.
All ILX models get more supportive and redesigned front seats, and A-spec vehicles can get their seats trimmed in red with suede inserts. Included in the package are stainless steel pedals, red gauges, a black hood and custom skid plates. Unfortunately, aside from minor color and trim changes outside of the seats, the ILX cabin layout remains unchanged, with a blocky dashboard and large strips of cheap, hard plastic on the middle floor.
You won’t find Acura’s new True Touchpad infotainment system on the 2019 ILX. Instead, there is the old, two-page layout. Available on mid-grade Premium and high-tech trims, the system’s graphics are sharper, and Acura claims a 30 percent improvement in response time. In my ILX Technology A-Spec tester, I found the navigation system very easy to use, and thankfully the Acura interface includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 10-speaker ELS sound system. Of course, if you opt for the base ILX, you won’t get this. Instead, you have a single-screen interface with no smartphone mirroring technology and a six-speaker audio system. Regardless of trim, the ILX has just one USB port, along with a 12-volt outlet in the center armrest, where passengers are likely to charge dead phones.
The only major technology improvement is the addition of the AcuraWatch safety package, which is standard on all ILXs and includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning with lane assist. Moving up to the Premium or Technology trims gives you blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Acura Ilx Prices, Reviews, And Pictures
The overall layout remains the same, but the infotainment and ILX technology have been updated. John Wong/Roadshow
All ILXs have the same 2.4-liter inline-four engine as the old model, making 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available in a single gearbox driving the front wheels. According to the EPA, this engine should return 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
If you’re a fan of older Honda and Acura models, you’ll love this high-performance, naturally aspirated inline-four. It certainly doesn’t rocket off the line, but power slowly builds to the 6,900-rpm redline. Sport mode revs the engine in every gear, the transmission makes quick gear changes and uses smooth and responsive gears. Acura’s dual-clutch transmission isn’t as good as Audi’s S-Tronic, but it’s close.
The ILX’s suspension gets a real workout on the twisty, rural roads outside of Columbus, Ohio. I love the smooth turn-in, respectable Continental tire grip and well-controlled body roll. Sure, the front end gets lost when you dive into a tight corner, but the ILX is a really fun car to drive enthusiastically. The only real dynamic disappointment is the steering, which is too light for my taste.
Acura Ilx Gets A Sharper Face, Standard Safety Tech
The ILX cruises through cities with ease. Unlike some dual-clutch transmissions, the ILX starts smoothly in first gear and downshifts quickly at low speeds. As stiff as the suspension is, it hits a happy medium, with enough damping to make the ILX comfortable in everyday driving situations. My only complaint around town is that the ILX carries a lot of tire and wind noise into the cabin.
With a base price of $26,895 including $995 destination, the 2019 Acura ILX price tag is actually $200 less than its predecessor. Upgrading to the Premium model with a better infotainment system for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto raises the price to $28,645, while the top tech trim starts at $30,545. The A-spec package adds extra package. 2000 dollars towards the final price of premium or technology cars.
Thanks to improved looks and a long list of standard safety features, the ILX is a better value than ever before – one of the best in its class, in fact. But with old bones and old technology, I’m not sure that’s enough to push the sales needle for this often-overlooked compact luxury sedan.
