Belt You Can Put A Buckle On
Welcome back to the Gentleman’s Gazette and the ‘Cut it away’ series. In today’s video we cut north of $2000 worth of belts. Why? Well, so that you don’t have to. We’ll explore what you get when you buy a $790 belt to an $84 belt sold at Allen Edmonds.
Usaf Blue Elastic Belt With Black Open Face Buckle And Tip
We cut Hermes belt that sells for $790, Fort Belvedere that sells for $240, Brooks Brothers that sells for $98, Montblanc that sells for $320-$400, Gucci belt that sells for $490 USD. and an Allen Edmonds belt that retails for $120, but I think they sell more in the $80-$84 range.
First, let’s take a quick look at the loops and then cut the skin open. First, Allen Edmonds. It is a traditional belt buckle, sewn in, removable. Here’s the belt. But the loop came out right.
It says “brass fixed” and then “sheath fixed”. MAN. Aman arranged. Solid copper. Here you can see the plate that is Allen Edmonds’ belt buckle.
Now on the Gucci belt here, you see we have the original part here. It’s all new Gucci made in Italy. Let’s break it down. Heavy, heavy. Also looks solid brass with a nice weight, very good. It can be said that it is solid. Better than the Allen Edmonds loop. It’s definitely a thicker, thicker liner.

And then we have the Brooks Brothers buckle. Here it says: “Made in Italy”. I don’t know if it’s brass or what. Now you can actually see that I’m cutting in the clip. And everything remains silver. No brass got through.
We have the Fort Belvedere clasp here, and one of the things we’ve done with our clasps that a lot of people don’t do is we’ve used extra thick palladium gold plating, which is 10 times thicker. you get normal. Just to make it last. Well, that also means that palladium is expensive and gold is also very expensive, so it’s just, yeah, a very expensive clasp.
Solid copper. Made in Italy. It should last you a long time. Different men wear clips differently, depending on how much they sweat. And often, in cheaper clips, you can see that they’re showing their age after a while. This shouldn’t be the case with these clips. They should last you a long time.
Here we have the Hermes buckle. It costs $335 individually. The belt is, I think, $455, so $790 total. It is very well finished. You can see it matte from the back, shiny on the sides. It looks like a nice piece. It says “Made in France”. Everything looks silver. There is no information on their website about exactly what they have.

Now let’s separate the belts. Montblanc belt here, I lost the loops. I’ve had them for years. You see I gave it. He even opened up just by wearing it. And when I had that experience, it was like I wanted a belt that could do more than just that. But I want belts that really last. So that was my inspiration for the Fort Belvedere Beltline.
And here you can see that this one opens itself very easily because the wire just isn’t that thick. That is all. Two layers of skin. One of them is the upper part of the skin. It is like a crocodile calf in relief. And then down here, it’s thicker skin. It is an inner lining.
Even before the strap is cut, the Montblanc leather strap has already separated between the layers.

You can see, in the corner, here it gets thinner from the corner. Thin in the corner here and there. Tanned leather – dyed with aniline – looks very good. You can see it’s a little darker in the middle than the outside. However, she seems to have very good skin.
I think you can see how it ages over time, right? The skin was really good. What was not good were the seams and they came apart and that’s why I could take it apart so easily.
Also, if you look at the bracelet, it bends a bit. You can see the curve, it bends upwards. This is usually something you get with belts, especially less expensive belts. They really create a curve when you wear them.
Just look at this one for example. You can really see the crease on the belt. This is Allen Edmonds’ belt. And usually – I don’t know. I would say a cheap belt brand.

And Allen Edmonds is here. You can see, here on the edge, it’s a border. The Montblanc was also painted in a matching leather color. It’s definitely darker here.
Just cut off the skin here. So you can see what’s there and I’ll try to separate the layers just like Montblanc. So the Allen Edmonds, like the Montblanc, seem to have a very simple construction. You basically have two layers of skin, right? They just cut on all ends, thin the edge and then sew. Same construction.
Montblanc wasn’t really stuck in between. It was floating. Allen Edmonds, on the other hand, got stuck in the middle. I think the difference is that over time the glue can loosen and swell if you don’t have glue to begin with. It may never manifest itself. But glue is fine. It’s not a sign of poor quality or anything like that.
Now I’m just going to try to separate those layers here. Here it is. You can see me crawling here. And actually the point density is so strong that I won’t remove this part. So I have to cut it separately.
Apg Quick Release Buckle Belt 1.5
You can also see that there’s this second layer that’s black in the middle of the belt, which should probably just thicken it up a bit. By the way, you have this second piece of skin here. They had a brogue with glue inside.
I must say that the quality of the leather is a bit cheaper. The ending is fine. There is some wax. It’s good for a belt, but nothing special.
Let’s look at this one here. Brooks Brothers belt. A bit of an interesting dark layer and then a light layer. Although from the front I guess you can tell it’s a solid brown because it’s kind of a brown finish. However, you wouldn’t expect something dark underneath.
Cut it diagonally. You can really see it in black and white. So you level out over time as this top layer wears off, obviously the skin is pigmented. You’ll actually see something black under it that looks kind of weird. I don’t even know if the leather is full grain or rather a leather product. Apparently it wasn’t the best quality material.
Nylon Canvas Belt
So this is Brooks Brothers. It can be seen that it is moldy. This is the upper brown part of the skin. It looks like full leather. Not like a leather product. The bottom layer, the leather lining, looks strange. I would have to test it in a lab to tell you exactly what it is. But this is not pure leather, I tell you.
Of course, as you know, at $98, you might have different expectations. But even here on the top you can see that you know once the top comes out you’re going to see a lighter color.
Sometimes if you want to achieve a certain effect on top where you want to almost look at the skin, the bottom has to be lighter than this, right? You wouldn’t get this effect if everything underneath was the same color.
So it’s not necessarily a matter of quality. You may have darker skin on top than on the bottom. But if you have skin as pigmented as here, where there’s really only one solid layer of color on something, it’s usually hiding something below.
