Non-synthetic oils for standard base engines. It is the cheapest oil you can buy and is suitable for almost any car.

Engine Flushing: Everything You Need To Know

Synthetic oil is designed for high-tech engines. In general, synthetic oils last longer than non-synthetic oil blends. They also clean your engine more effectively and flow better at low and high temperatures. However, synthetic oil is more expensive due to the advanced processes required to produce it. Not all engines get all the benefits of synthetic oil. If you put synthetic oils in an old, non-compliant engine, you’re probably wasting money.

Semi-synthetic oils offer a mid-range option that is higher quality than non-synthetic, but much less expensive than fully synthetic oil. Therefore, drivers on a tight budget can experience the benefits of synthetic motor oil additives.

If your vehicle’s dashboard has a high mileage (over 180,000 km), we recommend looking for high mileage oil blends. This ensures your engine runs smoothly, reduces the risk of leaks and extends its life. Over time, engine parts wear out and can crack. This type of oil will slow down this process. High Mileage Oil contains additives that go into the engine seals to maintain their shape and increase the flexibility of the components.

Viscosity is a measurement used to determine a liquid’s resistance to flow. For most oils, this is measured in two parts (5W-30 or 10W-40). The first part of the specification determines how well the oil flows in cold winter temperatures (the W stands for winter). The lower the number, the better the oil will flow around your engine on a cold day/night.

The second part of the specification determines how easily the oil will flow at standard engine operating temperatures. Again, a lower number means the oil will flow more easily.

Consult your vehicle’s manual for the recommended level of engine viscosity. If you can’t find the manual, look on the engine oil cap or google the engine model.

It is extremely beautiful, drives great and has all the options including BMW 6NR gadgets. It’s really cool that this is being reported on Twitter. I don’t believe in extended BMW oil change intervals, so this one will have the 1M oil changed every 5000 miles with synthetic oil. Serviced by local dealer for 1200 miles with 5000 miles to go. I understand there is a lot of debate about how often to change the oil in new BMWs and what oil to use, I will skip the discussion, but you can see I believe in the heritage of this family.

The first task is to drive the car to heat the oil. And pain! When we’re done, let’s drag it into my garage to put on the lift. If there is no lift, jacks or ramps will do. When the car is parked, the first thing I do is open the hood and remove the old oil filter. You don’t have to remove the oil filter first, you can drain the oil first, that’s the order I like to do. People with OCD will need to remove oil residue from the oil filter housing.

Over the years, BMW has been making simple things like changing the oil more and more difficult to do yourself. On the E36, like my old S52 M3, you can use a 13mm socket found in any toolbox to remove the oil filter. They upgraded the E46 M52 and M54 engines and allowed me to purchase a 36mm socket. With the E90 and N52/54/55 engines they dropped all the way down and now you have to special order a cover that fits over the black plastic oil filter housing.

Pick it up with tongs and you’ll make a serious mark. Fortunately, Bavarian Autosport sells a custom oil filter housing cover for $15 and has a 17mm hex head on top that is interestingly the same size as the oil drain plug.

One thing BMW executives are missing is engine options. Fortunately, they exist in cyberspace and have been extremely stable. My 05 ZHP M54 needs 6.9 liters and this 1M N54 also needs 6.9 liters. Incredibly, BMW lists the capacity of the windscreen washer system at 5.9 litres, but does not mention the amount of oil that needs to be added to the engine without a dipstick.

Remove the dirty oil filter and the two o-rings, the large black one and the much smaller green one. I use a very small flat head screwdriver, but you can also use a small photo. Replace them with new O-rings in the oil filter box. Don’t forget to apply fresh oil before installing the new ones. Then place the new oil filter into the black housing and slide the assembly back into the engine. Fortunately, the 25Nm torque specification for the oil filter housing is listed on the top of the oil filter housing.

Here’s How Often To Change Your Car Oil

Once under the car, look for a small hatch in the fender. Take a large screwdriver and turn the lock 180 degrees and the door will simply swing down. This sunroof is very cool and will hopefully hold up to a lot of use unlike some previous generations where parts can easily loosen or break so many shops just remove the panel and say nothing.

Opening the door reveals a 17mm hex drain plug that opens towards the passenger side front tire. I use a 1/2″ hex 17mm socket to loosen the screw, but you can also use a 3/8 socket. I like hex sockets because they are less likely to trip the plug. Unscrew the drain plug until it almost comes out.

Now comes the tricky part. It doesn’t leave oil on the hands, which you’ll see in the video, which I didn’t have much luck with. I usually like to use a plug with a short extension, but that combination doesn’t fit in the space BMW offers inside the hatch.

I like to let it drip for a while, even with the oil hot. Once the oil stops flowing, you can replace the drain plug, but first make sure you put in a new copper washer. Torque up to 25 Nm. Be careful not to over tighten and remove the oil pan.

What Happens When You Overfill Your Car With Oil?

Finally add 6.9 liters of 5w/30 synthetic. I use a clean funnel so I pour less oil into the 1M. When cleaning the oil, be sure to take it with you for recycling. The local auto parts store I use has a recycling bin and there is no charge for disposal.

*Disclaimer – Hot oil can cause burns. Before doing so, check all torque specifications and fill the tank. And don’t throw the car at yourself.

Different types of motor oils perform differently depending on the type of engine you have. Adding the wrong type of motor oil to your car can lead to a “just put oil in the car, it won’t start” situation.
