The Mazda Miata, or MX-5, has been around since 1989 and is currently in its fourth generation, the ND. Here we have a third generation Miata, NC. This was before SkyActiv and before Mazda and Ford divorced the Miata. To be clear, this Miata is an NC1 Miata. The NC Miata underwent a facelift in 2009 (NC2) and another in 2013 (NC3).

Why did Martin buy a Miata? His first car in Gran Turismo was an NA Miata. It’s that simple.
The MX-5 is a rear wheel drive car with a front engine, 4 cylinder NA (Naturally Aspirated) engine. Small roadsters are often associated with older British automakers (MG, Triumph, Austin-Healey, etc.), but the Japanese have notable roofless cars like the Miata, Toyota MR-S, and S2000. In fact, things have gone downhill with the likes of the Suzuki Cappuccino, Honda Beat and Honda S660.
The Mazda Miata has a 50-50 weight distribution, which I first suspected when Martin told me about it. I hear this almost all the time when people talk about FR cars. Well, to prove the point, Mazda made this video about balancing the MX-5. If we still want to argue that this video has some kind of trick, maybe we’ll try the experiment ourselves if the budget is there.
Unlike the Honda S2000 and Toyota MR-S, the Mazda Miata will be available in showrooms for 2018. A new Mazda Miata ND will cost you RM241, 198.00 (OTR without insurance).

If we buy in the used market, the Miata NC still costs more than RM100,000, but most of them are automatic. Miata NA (1.8 manual) could sell for 50k. More NAs and NBs are available at mudah.my with the lowest price starting at RM50,000 and the highest starting at RM75,000 with the 1.6 engine.
However, if you want to try track driving or autocross on a small budget, I recommend the Proton Satria instead. They’re cheap to crash and fix when you’re just getting started. Miatas may be a more popular car choice in other countries such as the US, UK and New Zealand, but they are still cheap in Malaysia.
The Mazda Miata is fun, but a little claustrophobic (with the top down). It is a traditional fun car with hydraulic power steering, mechanical handbrake, standard 6-speed manual transmission, analog gauges and no push button start. I like it. It’s also more forgiving and easier to drive than cars like the Toyota Corolla AE86 and Nissan Skyline R32. Martin installed a short shifter, so I can imagine driving the stock NC Miata shifter for a smoother ride. The throttle is also electronic and I believe this adds to the Miata’s smooth power delivery at low speeds.
The ride is engaging, the steering response is very good. Shifting is a joy and 2nd and 3rd have a very decent range. Even when accidentally installing straight pipes*, the car is not that loud, even with the top down. It’s comfortable at low speed and not jittery when you put it on. I expected a less comfortable ride from a car of this size, but I was pleasantly surprised by the ride comfort.

Getting inside can be claustrophobic for some. The car is low, small and rear-wheel drive. The gearbox already takes up a lot of space in the cabin. Everything is very close to you from the steering wheel, the gear lever, the handbrake and the roof. What I like about the cabin is that you can rest your left hand perfectly on the armrest when changing gears. The floor-mounted gas pedal, which is available on all Mazda cars, is irreplaceable. It makes driving more enjoyable and puts your feet in a more comfortable position.
Pictured above is the 2015 Mazda 2 foot model I tested earlier. Unfortunately, Mazda has yet to introduce the NC1 Mazda Miata. The ND Miata has a floor-mounted accelerator pedal. Having experienced 2 Mazdas, I have to say that the drive has never let me down.
The seats installed are Nissan Skyline R34 half-bucket seats that Martin wrapped to match the various interiors (including the steering wheel).

As mentioned earlier, this is the first divorce between Mazda and Ford. Therefore, Ford has the right to manufacture and use this engine under the Duratec brand. Mazda calls this machine the MZR engine, which stands for “MaZda Responsive.”
The Mazda MX-5 Miata NC is powered by a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated 16-valve DOHC LF-VE engine. The NC1’s interior isn’t a genuine fake cabin, and Mazda has rectified that in the facelifted NC2. There is a one in a million chance that the engine oil is low (with NC1) and unfortunately this happened at one point with Martin’s Mazda Miata.
Mazda fixed this problem when the NC2 was launched and added other improvements such as better suspension geometry. I believe things improved even more after the introduction of the NC3, and if you’re looking for an NC Miata, the safe bet is to go for the NC3 (NC3 is almost impossible to find in Malaysia. You can go for NC2 instead).
The NC1 is also guilty of using unreliable plastic parts. An example of this is the coolant tank. As the plastic went, the threads on the cooler cap eventually broke, so Martin replaced it with a Moroso aftermarket cooler.

I like the Mazda Miata. It’s a fun car. It is small, fast and very attractive to drive. But it’s not as expensive in Malaysia as in other countries like UK, USA and New Zem (also used in Miatas). It’s definitely a Miata NC1. Of course, NC2 or NC3 would be a better choice (if you’re looking for NC) because the car will roll over after receiving feedback.
To his delight. The Miata puts a smile on your face (if there aren’t one in a million gas leaks). It is a small rear wheel drive car with an open top and a 2.0L engine. I imagine the Miata is perfect for stress relief.
Sounds smart, we are all entitled to our opinions. To me, the NC Miata still has a pretty happy face, unlike the ND Miata’s ugly smile. For a prettier look, try the NA Miata with pop-up headlights.
