When asked why the stores were closing, a spokesperson said in an email that the company “continues to optimize its retail footprint.” This is business jargon for closing underperforming stores (sometimes close to other locations) and keeping those that make enough money.

Office Depot — whose parent company also owns OfficeMax — has four other stores in Fresno and Clovis. The company expects customers to shop from them online or visit nearby stores.

In May, the company announced plans to lay off 13,100 workers by 2023 and close an unspecified number of stores and distribution facilities.

It said it will close 90 stores by 2021 after closing 55 stores earlier.

“Office Depot continues to optimize its retail footprint and as a result, the Office Depot store at 722 West Broad St. will close on Saturday, April 24,” company spokeswoman Shera Bishop said via email.

The store opened in November 2005 after the Bodo District was designed as a 3-building, $60 million redevelopment project. The 19,000-square-foot Office Depot space will be part of a food hall called The Warehouse, which is now being developed by Hendricks Commercial Properties, owner of Bodo.

ODP Corp., which operates Office Depot, OfficeMax and several regional office supply companies, said sales fell 9% in 2020 from a year earlier, according to the company’s annual report released last month. Gross profit was down 13%.

Despite the large number of offices, people no longer have room in suburban Boise for office supplies, except for a limited supply of items in a few stores that focus on food products. As noted in the long-running Dunder-Mifflin documentary called The Office, sales of paper and office supplies have increasingly moved online.
