The Netflix original film Triple Frontier reunites the trio as the veterans attempt to rob $75 million in cash from a location in South Africa. Since this is an action movie, the group learns that more money has been made than expected – and not everyone is on the same page about their ill-gotten gains. Besides Garrett Hedlund and Charlie Hunnam, this movie also has a strong cast and some epic exchanges. Definitely worth a look.
Murphy’s Law theorizes that if something can go wrong, it can. David Leitch tests this concept in his latest action thriller Bullet Train and the result is carefully choreographed mayhem. Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, a down-on-his-luck assassin who takes on the easy task of moving a bag full of cash onto a bullet train in Tokyo. But Murphy’s Law will kick in when a series of killers board the train – and Ladybug is in the middle! The film features action scenes choreographed by Leitch (the classic car fight is an example) but also has one of the most exciting scenes in an action film. From Hiroyuki Sanada as an aging Yakuza member to Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Thierry Henry as a pair of rowdy brothers, Bullet Train is packed with talent.
It’s rare to get the green light to shoot mostly black scenes, let alone an action-packed part. However, The Lady King not only hit theaters, but also went on to solidify Gina Prince-Bytewood as one of the most dynamic action directors working today. Based on the real-life story of Agoji’s army, the film opens with a dramatic action sequence depicting Agoji’s ambush and massacre. And like Bullet Train, the film is packed with talent — chief among them Viola Davis, who gives a stellar performance as the sarcastic leader Naniska. This makes a great double feature with Prince-Bytewood’s Netflix original, The Old Guard.
