Modern Mazdas are a far cry from the cars of the past, which had a reputation for bland, generic looks and quality. The soft, comfortable ride left little to be desired in terms of body roll in corners and bounce in curves, but the CX-5 demonstrated fantastic grip and road holding, with a decidedly sporty vibe at high speeds. It’s comfortable without feeling boring or floaty, and boasts handling that’s closer to a sedan than an SUV. We found the brakes to be a bit stiff and could use more bite, but the car performs adequately during hard stops. The auto-hold feature was also particularly effective and easy to use in bumper-to-bumper traffic, while selecting Sport mode added more oomph when testing hard, fast acceleration. One of the best-looking crossovers we’ve driven, the CX-5 impressed even those who don’t normally like vehicles larger than the CX-3.

The standard four-cylinder gas engine earns EPA-rated figures of 25/31/28 mpg in FWD configuration on the City/Highway/Combined cycle, while the AWD version drops slightly to 24/30/26 mpg. The turbocharged inline-4 is the least efficient, managing 22/27/24 mpg on the same cycle. The CX-5 has a well appointed and luxurious interior. This is surprising at this price point, where much lower expectations can be forgiven. Upgraded to dual-zone climate control, a sliding glass moonroof, leather-trimmed seats and midrange, the entry-spec Sport model is equipped with air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cloth-trimmed seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
