The CX-5 has an interior packed with more premium materials than you’d expect from an affordable SUV, but it also combines it with a stylish design. Practicality may lag behind the best in the segment, but there’s plenty of room for five, the seats are comfortable and the overall feel is luxurious. The larger infotainment screen that recently became standard also helps the CX-5 feel modern, especially when some rivals insist on selling entry-level models with dark-age infotainment systems. The interior of the CX-5 is a great place to be, even on the lower trim levels. Not many rivals can say the same.
There’s a reason sedans are disappearing, and that’s because a crossover like the CX-5 offers all the extra space you need without the added bulk that comes with a true body-on-frame SUV. The Mazda offers a lot of space and has room for five passengers. Front passengers will have more legroom than rear passengers, but even taller adults will find rear seats with 39.6 inches of legroom and 39 inches of headroom. The seats are comfortable and supportive enough for the daily commute to school and work, and comfort was further improved last year with plusher suspension and more comfortable, upgraded seats.

Reiterating our earlier statement about materials, the base CKS-5 2.5 S is the only trim with black cloth upholstery. The 2.5 S Select model offers a choice of Silk Beige or Black synthetic leather, while the 2.5 S Preferred model is upholstered in genuine black leather or Silk Beige synthetic leather. The 2.5 S Premium and S Premium Plus are trimmed in leather – available in parchment or black, while the 2.5 Turbo only has black leather. However, the Turbo Signature specification takes it up a notch with Caturra Brown Nappa leather and real wood laminate inserts on the dashboard and doors. Red leather seats and red interior stitching are reserved for the Carbon Edition, although you can opt for black leather instead.
Mazda Cx 5: Choosing The Right Trim
If the automaker wants its crossover to top the shortlist, it’s going to have to offer a fair amount of practicality. Ample cargo space is spot on, and while the CX-5’s trunk isn’t the largest in its class, it’s manageable. There is 30.9 cubic meters behind the second row, and it will gladly swallow school bags and luggage. But it’s miles away from the CR-V’s cavernous 39.3 cubic feet and the RAV4’s 37.6 cubic feet. Folding the rear seats down opens up more space, but at 59.3 cubic feet, that’s still 17 cubic feet more than you’ll find in a Honda.
Cabin storage is generous thanks to a large center console compartment and deep door pockets. The glove box is also large enough to hold a few small items, and the small drawer in front of the shifter is the perfect size for smartphones.
Mazda has ensured that the CX-5 is equipped with comfort and convenience features regardless of trim level. The entry-level S model features remote keyless entry, push-button start, an electronic parking brake, a multifunction manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and air conditioning. The driver’s seat is manually adjustable in six directions, and a leather steering wheel and shift paddles are standard. The S Select model adds keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and rear air-conditioning vents. The S Preferred adds a power sunroof, an eight-way driver’s seat, a six-way passenger seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Carbon Edition shares the specifications of the S Preferred. The S Premium has paddle shifters and more infotainment functions. Ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a head-up display are added to the S Premium Plus, while the Turbo is essentially a turbocharged S Premium Plus. The 2.5 Turbo Signature features a frameless auto-dimming mirror, traffic sign recognition, wood trim and a black fabric roof.
In terms of driver assistance, the base model includes traction control, hill start assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control is also included with smart city braking, pedestrian monitoring and forward collision warning. Lane departure warning and lane keep assist complete the list. Exclusive to the Signature are a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, cross-traffic assist and Smart City Brake for reversing.
Mazda Cx 5 Review Update
For 2021, Mazda has gone all out on the CX-5’s infotainment package, equipping even the base model with a 10.25-inch screen that features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. Mazda lags behind by fitting just four speakers on the S variant, but increases to six on the S Select, S Preferred and S Carbon Edition, while all other trims have a 10-speaker Bose system. As you’d expect, Bluetooth and dual front USB ports are standard, while the S Select adds dual rear USB charging ports and the S Premium adds SiriusXM satellite radio. Premium Turbo Signature also includes three years of SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link for a fully connected experience and navigation. The system looks elegant and responds well to inputs via the rotary dial on the center console. However, the Bose sound system we tested wasn’t great, but apart from this minor flaw, the infotainment package is one of the best in the segment.

The interior of the 2017 CX-5 appreciates some smart design touches. One such touch is the way the center console is divided by panels of leather-like material. The former separates the 7.0-inch infotainment screen above the dash from the air vents, and there’s another gap between those air vents and other controls, including climate control and heated seats. The overall effect is a particularly clean and, yes, premium-looking center console.
Especially for taller drivers, that central design can become a problem if you want your HVAC controls in a place that’s easy to find and operate at a glance. Instead, the 2017 CX-5’s HVAC controls are located at the bottom of the center console and sit in a plane that appears to be almost vertical, making it a bit more difficult to use. In addition to tilting the controls back for ease of use, perhaps a future CX-5 could replace the high-mounted heated seat and steering wheel buttons with lower HVAC controls.

Whether it’s those HVAC controls, the center steering wheel knob, or the volume knob, I love the way Mazda’s rotary knobs feel. Seriously, if you’re going to the store, spend a few seconds turning those controls. They feel great to wear and are treated with a rougher texture to maintain grip as heat or volume increases.
As for the volume control, it’s located on the cup holder on the center console instead of on the dashboard like you might have in your car. My longtime Motor Trend car is a 2017 Audi A4 with a similar volume control that I liked. The button is easy to use if you avoid steering wheel volume buttons, and I hope Mazda makes future volume buttons work as a forward/reverse controller like the A4 I I drive. Without it, the CX-5 offers the front passenger an easy way to switch the music to the next track if the infotainment system is displaying the navigation/map screens.
The 2017 CX-5’s infotainment screen is right where it should be, on top of the dash. This detail became important to me because while driving I don’t want to look far to see all the information on the screen.
The CX-5’s interior has come a long way since the first-generation model was introduced years ago, but if Mazda is going to market its cars as a premium brand alternative at a much better price, perhaps the future CX-5 will do just that.
