With a sticker price of $39,190 before on-road costs, it is priced in line with the Toyota Yaris Cross Urban AWD Hybrid ($37,990).
It’s more expensive than some of its rivals (such as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Stonic) and is priced within striking distance of the larger Kia Seltos GT-Line ($41,700) and the Hyundai Kona Highlander ($ 38,000).
The CX-3 has its roots in a different era of Mazda design with the CX-30, new CX-5 or even the BT-50 ute.
Its dashboard shares with the hatchback 2 and is inspired by the sporty MX-5. It’s a funky asymmetrical design that, in our Akari tester, was finished with quality materials.

The driver and passenger sit on leather-trimmed benches that provide a reasonably good view of the road ahead, with electric and memory adjustment for the driver.
The steering wheel feels like a quality item and the driving position is one of the most comfortable in the small SUV class.
Even at six and seven I am able to be comfortable behind the wheel, although the CX-30 again has room.
Technology is a key part of a small SUV’s appeal, and it’s a real weak point in the CX-3. Where most of the Mazda range has moved on to new infotainment systems, the MZD Connect setup seen here is slow to load, has blocky graphics and lacks a touchscreen.

The CX-3 AWD has a 44L fuel tank (front-wheel drive cars get 48L) and drinks 91 RON unleaded.
The CX-3 feels lighter on its feet than some of its new rivals, although its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine is unassuming.
While it’s responsive enough off the mark, the engine doesn’t pack much punch in the midrange and stutters as you push towards redline.
The 2.0-liter Atmo four isn’t as smooth as the turbo engine, and the CX-3 isn’t as refined as newer Mazda models, making it feel like it’s working harder.

It takes a while to settle from a cold start, strays into a rather faint and somewhat undefined mystery and sometimes the start/stop system can wreck the car. It’s a serviceable powertrain, but at $40,000 it needs to be more than that.
There are no signs or learning curve for people coming from older double decker cars. Bonus points go to the Mazda for having the right shift pattern in manual mode: push down, pull up.
We’ve praised the CX-3 for its excellent handling in the past, and it’s still a highlight with Akari AWD. Although it’s slightly heavier than the base front-wheel drive model, the range-topper responds intelligently when cornered and feels more balanced than a smaller SUV when you are there.
However, the ride on this particular CX-3 is harsher than the base model with the smaller wheels and narrower tires.

It’s mostly smooth, but we’ve already noticed that the suspension on base models is a lot more clinkie over bumps or potholes. With larger, heavier wheels and lower sidewalls to play with, this feeling carries over into the Akari AWD.
That undermines the car’s argument as a small luxury SUV and makes it feel dated with more refined German and Korean options. At highway speeds, the CX-3 feels high, placed for a small car.
At cruise it hums along happily, but ask for more (like overdrive) and the 2.0-litre engine starts to work hard and growl, especially if you have a few passengers.
Mirrors and tire noise are very muffled, but you still get the feeling that this is a city car.

Adaptive cruise control is smooth and snappy, though it doesn’t get active lane-focusing support even in top range.

If a small luxury Mazda SUV is what you want, the CX-30 Astina has a sticker price of around $40,000 and offers more space, significantly better technology, and just as much luxury.
