Mazda Car Key Programming – Losing your Mazda 3 keys can be more of a hassle than you think. Does anyone know if the updated Mazda keys (pictured left) can be programmed to work with older model vehicles?

I checked the FCCID on the 2019 CX-5 license plate and the updated plate sold online. The FCCID for the updated fob is the same except for the last digits (3 on the updated fob instead of 2).

Maybe positive. Often the last digit is just the version number. My personal preference would be the first one (on the right) as it looks less bulky.

My old 2008 CX9 had a way to program the car to accept a limited number of replacement/spare FOBs. IIRC, you need two FOBs already received. I would like to know if this is still valid. If so, I can just pick up a used one from eBay. Always good to have a spare.

What model year is the fob on the right side? My 2016.5 CX does not have a trunk open/release button, but my 2016 MX does.

Check out the Mazda 3 forums – I believe that model had the first updated fob for NA. I remember it not being optimal, but I could easily be wrong or it has since been proven wrong. When this thread first came up here, I mentioned that my favorite Mazda remote was the very thin, flat one that came with my 2006 MX-5, and even the removable key had a flat head that would fit in his pocket. It was very easy. This new remote is maybe 2x or even 3x thicker than the old one, but I prefer the flatter design over the thicker skin. “Is that a Mazda key ring in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?”.

Has anyone confirmed if you can program an old 2019 key into a 2020 or 2021 CX-5? I’ve had the 2021 for about a year now and I’m increasingly disliking the key…which seems to be the opposite of Mazda’s expectations.

However, looking at it, it looks like the old fob is *not* compatible with the new one. I’m not 100% sure, but that’s the guidance I’ve gotten from a few key car places I’ve talked to.
