Although rich in familiar Mazda qualities, the new CX-5 crossover is unlikely to challenge the sales of the Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue or Toyota RAV4. Built on a well-revised version of the outgoing model’s architecture, the sleek exterior design looks brand new. So is the interior.

The biggest issues plaguing the outgoing CX-5 are excessive road noise, a perceived low-level cabin and cargo handling issues, including uneven cargo space with the rear seats folded down and a lack of a power liftgate.

My brother-in-law, Bob Cacchiucci, who has owned a 2016 CX-5, noticed the peace right away. He also appreciated that the LCD screen was moved from the center console stack to the top of the instrument panel. The dashboard gets meters of texture. Add the included simulated wood trim and the ambience inside is elevated to a premium level (although I find the white-on-black gauge cluster a bit harsh).

The updated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine delivers 187 horsepower (three more than before) and 185 pound-feet of torque. Until the promised diesel engine arrives this fall (don’t hold your breath), that’s the only engine. The only gearbox is a 6-speed automatic – surprise – there are no paddle shifters on the wheels. While I’m sure a few owners use them, this is a company that whispers “zoom-zoom” in their ads.
