How To Put Gear Oil In A Manual Transmission – I have a Mk3 Jetta TDI with 445,000 miles. I practice manual transmission oil changes at 100,000 miles, except for a short interval when upgrading the diff. I decided to use the same oil change interval on my GTI. Volkswagen does not specify an oil change interval for the manual transmission. Regardless, I wouldn’t leave “lifetime oil” in the car. I drained the oil at 101,000 miles and sent it in for inspection. The results appeared normal except that copper and iron levels were slightly higher but still healthy. Because of the time and expense of changing the oil, I think I’ll drain the oil every 50,000 miles. Here are some tips I’ll share about my manual transmission oil change:
First, wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stained. Transmission oil does not drain as smoothly as engine oil. This may be due to the size of the canal; I can’t say for sure. It can be a confusing mess. Placing the drain pan as close to the drain as possible minimizes splashing. However, when removing the drain plug you can get close enough that it becomes an obstruction. To be fair, I didn’t get wet from the oil spray. But some small drops fell on my face and shoulders. I work in the land. Haha!

Next, always, always, remove the fill plug first and then the drain plug. Remove the transmission drain plug and for some reason the fill plug cannot be removed

The manual transmission takes 2.3 liters. So you need to buy 3 liters to do the job. I’ve seen videos on YouTube of people using funnels and long hoses to fill their transmissions from above the engine bay. This makes a mess under the car because when you fill the filler hole, you have to add more oil until the filler starts to come out of the hole. The oil in the tube flows through a tube into the already filled gearbox and then drips onto the floor. The longer the pipe, the bigger the mess. Of course, it’s been done that way for decades, and it’s not painful. But what if I told you there was a cleaner way? I use a suction tool that allows me to siphon oil from oil bottles and then pour it directly into the hole in the bottom of the car. After two liters, gradually increasing the final amount of oil will reduce the leakage. I use the same device to change my VAQ differential fluid. This is an awesome tool purchase!

A while ago I went to a Honda dealer to buy a two liter Honda MTF for $10. Finally, the parts supplier gave me the shredder for free. For years I have been told to use genuine Honda transmission fluid in that particular Honda part. Obviously, it has special additives that have a beneficial effect. I know people who have used Amsoil, but I don’t know what the results were.

The short ram intake had to be removed to get better access to the transmission filler plug, which was easier than the stock intake box. I disconnected the MAF sensor connector, the thick and thin vacuum tubes, and the two clamps securing the intake to the manifold. Directly under the MAF sensor connector is a bracket that is secured with a 12mm screw.
I recommend trying to break the top latch first. Why? Conversely, if the drain plug is opened first, all the liquid will drain out. If problems occur when removing the fill plug, there is no way to get the fluid back into the transmission.

I removed the top fill plug, cracked the drain plug with a 3/8 drive ratchet, and drained the MTF into the bottom container. Pull the filler pin and tilt the car slightly to the driver’s side as indicated to empty. I don’t have any pictures of the actual drain, but it looks like the fluid needs to be replaced.
After draining the fluid, I replaced the drain plug, jacked the car up, and changed the angle of the car from the driver’s side to the passenger side. Again, not an extreme gradient, but easy. There is a reason for that.
I inserted the funnel from the top of the engine compartment and inserted the end into the open filler hole. The funnel is in place and supported.
Leaning toward the passenger side helps keep some fluid in the transmission — not too much fluid, of course — but it’s better than leaning the car the other way.

I pour the MTF slowly into the funnel – not too much at once, as the funnel can be heavy and shifty, causing unwanted spills and waste. The first bottle emptied without a problem.
The second bottle was not so smooth. I didn’t bother to keep pouring, and about three quarters of the way through the bottle the MTF was out of the container. I caught as much as I could, but it was a pain to clean … I’ll have to be careful next time – slowly pour the second bottle into the funnel until some liquid comes out.
Not a very simple and difficult task, but there was a gap that could not have been avoided if I had been careful. Shifts feel good and I know the car’s transmission will be happy for a few thousand miles.
As for my misshifting, the so-called “shift lock out” on the 8th generation Civics is due to the retard valve in the factory clutch master cylinder (CMC) where I can’t shift into car gear at high rpm. Medicine? This includes replacing the EM1 clutch master cylinder from Hybrid Racing. I will elaborate later if absolutely necessary. I heard that changing the CMC is a hassle.
