Low power fob batteries are a problem. It takes less than two minutes for an experienced person to change one, and the battery is less than a dollar. A simple, inexpensive device like a Chromebook can sense and tell you the percentage of charge left on a wireless mouse, but for some reason, the five-digit car key fob always makes us cringe. Why in the world do dealers check and replace them every time they come to service?

The good news is that replacing the key fob battery is relatively easy. We’ll use the Mazda as an example, but most models follow the same steps and your owner’s manual should have pictures and instructions.
Before disassembling your fob, check your owner’s manual to see what type of LiCB battery your fob accepts. Our Mazda uses CR2025. We bought ten dollars on Amazon for $5. So the price is only fifty cents each. If you go to a hardware store or one that specializes in watch batteries, they charge more, but they may have batteries on the shelf. Mazda recommends that a flat screw end band is the tool you need. We followed the instructions and were glad we did.
The fob case is opened in our Mazda by first applying a small step to remove the hidden mechanical key. Even if the fob doesn’t work, this key will unlock your locked driver’s door. So knowing how to open your fob to release the mechanical key is important.

After the key is removed, the fob has a small holder where the tip of the gun is placed. A gentle (very gentle) twist helps the case begin to separate. Then insert the tip of the needle into the seam of the bag and it will be in two.
One part has a circular battery cover. Our manual said it would be curved but it’s actually different than the manual shows. Using tweezers, we gently pry it open and find the battery.
If you change something in the car, take some photos. That way, when you wake up, you can look back and see how things were arranged when you unpacked. A battery is a small coin-shaped disk. Top and bottom are different. It is called the upper part to be printed. It remains “on” in our assembly, so we removed the old battery and replaced it with a new one. Then we put the old battery into proper recycling.
Assembling the fob is as easy as putting the two parts together and sewing them together. Gently press the two parts together to secure them both together. After that we tested the battery and it works perfectly.

We keep our main fob battery in a small bag that we named “CX-5”. These little button batteries have a very long life, so one pack will last the life of a vehicle.
