Fortunately, during our 5 week trip to the South Island of New Zealand, Matt and I worked with Escape Rentals (3 weeks) and Mad Campers (over 2 weeks) to see how both would hold up when it came to the long haul. Both; l’s trip.

Our adventure with Mad Campers started on the second leg of our South Island New Zealand trip and we only worked with them for two weeks.

*(For full disclosure, Mad Campers offers us a lower media rate on the total cost of purchase and insurance).*

Mad Campers is a great company to work with and their helpline is second to none; The first few days we had problems with the car keys and the alarm system in the van, but they fixed it as soon as we got to the nearest car park in Kaikoura! They were responsive and helpful and couldn’t have done more to resolve it immediately.

As for the van itself, it is significantly smaller than the Van Escape Rentals’, but it still fits two people. Lack of storage hindered us at first, but I think that was most of the season. Although there is a bit of storage space inside the van, there is a wide roof which is great in the summer, but in the winter it’s a bit difficult because of the heavy rain, meaning we don’t want to get in and out. . What’s up!

Certified Self Contained Campervans

It’s easy to fold the bed back into chair and table position, and since the fridge is under one of the chairs, it’s great to have a cool place to store leftovers!

I think the main feature I like about Mad Campers is that their vans come with USB power points, LED lights and the ability to run a fridge continuously thanks to the innovative second battery.

This means that we don’t have to be in a place with a lot of power to charge the electronic battery while driving (a few kilometers of driving still charge the second battery, so we never run out!).

I love the modern Mad Campers vans and how innovative they are; They are a great campervan rental company in New Zealand and I’m glad we had the opportunity to work with them on our trip to the South Island!

All Escape Rental vans are Nissan Caravans with 2 liter petrol engines. Although the vans all have the same style and design, each car is painted with a unique design and art. This is definitely a highlight for me when choosing a campervan company in New Zealand as all other companies have the same design for each van. Plus, our van (aptly named Wax Eyed because of the giant Wax Eyed bird sprayed all over the bus) is incredibly beautiful and makes great Instagram photos!

The van is very easy and comfortable to drive and it is very good on fuel (300km to 400km depending on the condition of the road/road we take).

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen me talk about (read: complain about) the fact that we wake up with icy knuckles most days.

A real van. It was definitely an adventure, and while it was funny in retrospect, it was almost unbearable at the time.

Some nights it dropped to -6 degrees in the van and it was unbelievably cold inside even though it was the middle of winter when we traveled to the South Island!

Things You Need To Know Before Renting A Motorhome In New Zealand

I would not hesitate to do it all again just yet, but I think the escape should consider better insulation for the van; I’m sure they are fine in the summer, but very cold in the winter!

Other than that, we absolutely loved our time in the Escape Rentals van; It’s cheap, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the design on each van is unique, interesting and very cool!

Summer rates: Christchurch to Christchurch: $123.14 daily rate (plus $35 daily rate for full insurance).

Hiring A Campervan In New Zealand

It’s cheaper to rent a campervan in the winter, so if you can handle the cold I always recommend a winter trip!

When people ask which company I prefer for camper van hire in New Zealand, I can’t give a definitive answer.

Both companies are amazing in their own way and each company has advantages and disadvantages when renting a van from them.

Kabur Rentals will always have a special place in my heart, especially the Panon candle van, because it was the first time I spent an extended period of time camping. It is incredibly spacious, comfortable to drive and sleep in, and well equipped. Many camps are important. However, it is still very old and a bit torn and very cold in winter.

Vans Mad Campers, on the other hand, are more modern and have more parking spaces, as well as cool features like LED lights, built-in refrigerators, and USB ports. However, the interior of the van is smaller, has less storage space and is more comfortable.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a campervan when choosing a company to hire from New Zealand. I hope I’ve helped you walk through the pros and cons of both companies to make your decision easier!

A couple of Jucy vans when we were traveling in New Zealand and although I have no experience using them, I know they were recommended by other travellers.

They have a variety of vehicles including basic used cars, luxury trucks and vans very similar in shape and size to Escape Rentals!

Average price for a 22-day summer rental: $86 for a standard Toyota to $152 for a premium Toyota van (excluding insurance).

Average price for a 22-day season rental: $25 for a standard Toyota to $41 for a premium Toyota van (excluding insurance).

Although their vans are incredibly comfortable and often come with showers and toilets (think luxury vans as opposed to a campervan!), the price is too expensive for me!

Kiwi 7 Berth Motorhome

Having said that, they seem to be very popular around New Zealand, but I can definitely say that they are more suitable for older travelers as opposed to backpacks.

Their vans are exquisitely designed and provide luxurious accommodation and transportation throughout your trip!

Average price for a 22-day summer rental: $177 to $344 per day for 2 people (including insurance).
