Graco Nautilus 65 Car Seat – The Graco Nautilus 65 LX 3-in-1 Car Seat is a forward-facing combination car seat that works as a 5-point harness, high back booster, and backless booster. Other similar versions of this chair include the Nautilus 65 DLX and the Nautilus 80 Elite.
We have previously reviewed the Graco Nautilus and the Graco Nautilus with Safety Surround. Graco has upgraded the Nautilus to the Nautilus 65 LX/65 DLX/80 Elite. Instead of having the Nautilus and the Graco Argos, Graco combined the two different seats in this seat flavor, let’s take a closer look.

The Nautilus is not a new seat on the market, but Graco has combined the best features of the Nautilus and Argos into one seat. There was nothing wrong with two separate chairs, but Graco has a new combination seat to market, and they didn’t need two very similar seats sitting side by side on store shelves.

The main change is that Nautilus now has a non-recyclable tool. A simple redesign from Argos has been integrated into this version of the seat.
Also, the Argos had head restraint, meaning you could only use the four lower head positions in armor mode. The Nautilus 65 LX allows the use of the head in any position for operation mode. This means less confusion and confusion for parents. A good thing.
The Nautilus remains a three-way seat that allows forward-facing children of a safe age (at least 2 years old) and weighing more than 22 pounds to sit in the harness. Then it becomes a high back booster for the older kids and then a high back booster to complete the hat trick.
The terminology of the Nautilus seat “three in one” has confused many parents in the past, but Graco has listened to the feedback and now makes it much clearer that this seat is only forward-facing, the Graco Nautilus is not rear-facing. . .
Graco Nautilus 65 3 In 1 Harnessed Booster Car Seat
Another common complaint with the Nautilus in recent years, discussed in our 2013 seat review, was the short depth of the side strap and the difficulty of movement. Graco has listened to consumers and made it much easier to adjust the waist band. In the 2013 revision and up until this version of the seat, there were two side strap positions at 5.5 inches and 7 inches deep. Now, on the updated Nautilus, there are three harness positions. They still have 5.5″ and 7″ deep holes, but they’ve added a third one with an 8″ outlet.

Graco has also added a third recline position for the Nautilus. Any lying position can be used for any age, weight or sitting position. However, they don’t really have much in the way of baby comfort. The distance between them isn’t great enough to be more than a help with fitting, or maybe a small change for a baby. For parents who want to quickly recline the seat into a comfortable sleeping position, it won’t work. No combination seat on the market, to be fair to Graco.
Another change to the Nautilus compared to previous versions is that the backless mode now holds up to 120 pounds instead of 100 pounds. It’s a direct merger of Argos.
Graco Nautilus 65 3 In 1 Harness Booster Car Seat
New for this version of Nautilus, the instrument now has small pockets on the cover. The seat inserts are folded so that the seat belt stays out of the way while the child is getting in and out of the seat. I found it a bit annoying to use (a bit strong and a bit hard to get the thread to stick) but I think it’s something that will get a lot easier with practice and time. That’s a great idea. Because they are pouches, the tongues are also covered and away from the strong sun, reducing the chance of burning the baby or parents who touch them. Graco calls this the Fuss Free tool.
Installing the latch is easy on the Nautilus 65 LX, the strap is already attached, just add it, add weight and tighten.
Installing Nautilus is usually very easy in lever mode. The belt is open behind the child and the lower anchor connector strap is already inserted into the belt.
Once you’ve installed the Nautilus with the lower anchors, just make sure the strap isn’t twisted, attach the lower seat anchor connectors to the car’s lower anchor, add weight and pull the tail tight. If you can’t pull the tail tight enough with this method, pull the seat cover to the side to gain access to the belt path, then continue adding weight to the seat and pull the tail again. Pulling the cap to the side changes the angle of your pull and generally makes it much easier to press.

The cord is stored here in the upper right corner of the Graco Nautilus 65 LX. The strap of the bottom anchor connector is held in the bottom right corner by the corresponding point of the other connector on the other side.
To install the Nautilus with a seat belt, hold the lower anchors in their designated storage positions and slide the seat belt along the belt path. If necessary, secure the belt from your vehicle or use the included buckle, add weight and pull tight.
The Nautilus DLX and Nautilus 80 Elite have an integrated lock. Graco claims to use a latch when installing with a back and shoulder belt, not a latch retractor. The lock is easy to use and will be familiar to parents who have used most Graco locks for the past eight years or more. A gray and a red wing that extend in opposite directions from each other.
Nautilus allows LATCH to be used in high boost mode. Because the LATCH belt goes directly through the top belt of the seatback, it cannot be used when the seat is backless. The weight of the child does not affect the use of the lower anchor in booster mode, because the lower anchors only support the seat, not the seat and child.

The Nautilus 80 Elite has webbing protectors, which are necessary when the seat is used in harness mode. Instrument covers are optional on the Nautilus 65 LX and 65 DLX.
Switching between modes in Nautilus isn’t particularly difficult, but it does take a few minutes. This is not a seat that you can easily use for a 4-year-old on a ride, strap in a 7-year-old next, backless a 10-year-old, and then flip back without wasting time making adjustments. But these changes are not difficult.
To convert the Nautilus from harness mode to high back mode, first remove the harness from the rear splitter plate, then pull the harness up to shoulder height. Hint. Fasten the chest clip and crotch buckle. This will make it easier to keep everything together after you take it apart. Then remove the seat thigh cover and pull up the backrest. You can press the two red buttons to release them and fold the seat back. This will expose the harness arms and hip end joints. Remove these sleeves and then put them on, straightening the back again and pressing the buttons if necessary. Unclip the crotch strap and remove it from the seat. The dual head adjustment strap is pulled tight so that the spacer plate is against the bottom plastic.
To convert the seat to seat belt mode, reverse this process. Return the thigh pieces to the arms, fasten the crotch strap, insert the shoulders and reattach to the divider plate.

To switch from high-back to backless mode on the Nautilus, fold the seat down to hip height once more with the red buttons pressed. When they are up, there are two more red buttons on the back. Pull together and pull the antic part from the high back.
Customizability in all modes is generally good in Nautilus. Traditionally, Graco has good seat belt settings for almost all sizes of children. The Nautilus is a bit more unpredictable, but with this model (6 years in the making, 45 inches, 48 pounds) the belt was ideal. It’s still a thinner seat in the shoulders, so it’s not a safety issue, if you have a child with wider shoulders, you may find that they feel uncomfortable in a child that is thinner in the shoulders.
