Before disassembling your key fob, check your owner’s manual to see what type of LiCB battery your key fob can use. Our Mazda uses the 2025 CR. We bought 10 of them on Amazon for about $5. So the cost per unit is only about 50 cents. If you go to a hardware store or store that helps you buy watch batteries, they may have batteries off the shelf, although they have a higher charge. Mazda suggests you’ll need a flat-blade screwdriver with a strip on the end. We followed the instructions and were happy with it.
Mazda’s key fob first opens using a microscale to reveal a hidden mechanical key. This key can open a locked driver’s door even if the car won’t start. This will help you easily figure out how to open your fob to unlock the mechanical key.
When you remove the key, there is a small stop in the chain that allows you to insert the tip of a screwdriver. I twisted it gently (very gently) and the case came loose. Next, I ran the tip of a screwdriver along the case seam, splitting the case in two.

One part has a round battery cover. They said the guide would break, but in reality it was different from what the guide showed. I carefully lifted it by the thumbnail, exposing the battery.
Always take a few pictures when replacing anything in your car. This way, if a mistake occurs, you can look back on how things were organized when you took it apart. A battery is a small disk that looks like a coin. The top and bottom are different. We call the top part the printed part. Since this is the “best” of our range, we removed the old battery and replaced it with a new one. Then set aside the old batteries for proper recycling.

Some drivers report that the 3V CR2032 works better and increases the range of their key fob. The numbers indicate the actual size of the battery. 3.2mm in 2032 and 2.5mm in 2025.
The same goes for tension. No need to burn the ignition to upgrade your battery. So, if 2032 is correct, there is no reason not to use it.
Do not worry. It’s very easy. No special Allen key required. No need to wear rubber gloves or open circuits. It can be done quickly with just a screwdriver and 1 minute.
If your key fob doesn’t work, the battery may not be the cause. You can resolve the error by resetting the system and testing the receiver. There aren’t many things that can go wrong with your keychain, so it shouldn’t take all day to figure it out.

The key fob has only been used for a year and today the dashboard showed that the key fob battery was low. Removing the keys from the fob doesn’t show me much information. I hate looking at things.
