We call the current Mazda 3 Turbo all-wheel-drive hatchback the toughest rival to the Audi A3 and BMW 2-Series of the world. But what about non-turbocharged variants like the 2023 Carbon Edition tested here? Well, it’s still reassuring.

The 2.5-litre engine may be more power efficient than the 3 Turbo, but it’s also more affordable and, at least as equipped here, it’s just as good inside. Plus, with four-wheel drive, it offers a combination of all-weather peace of mind and a premium interior that’s essentially unheard of among standard compact cars.

In fact, its main competitors are the Subaru Impreza and Honda Civic, although neither of them are compatible. The former has standard AWD but a small interior; the latter is front-wheel drive only but has a premium-feeling cabin.
As for acceleration, it’s all three. Our AWD Mazda 3 Carbon Edition hit 60 mph in 7.6 seconds, much quicker than the last Impreza we tested, although the new Subie arrives in 2024 with a more powerful engine that makes it more competitive. The Civic hatchback also lags behind the Mazda, up to 60 mph, although it closes the gap as speeds increase; This is likely due to the Mazda’s AWD offline traction and the fact that aggressive throttle inputs from a stop and at low speeds are met with hesitation by the six-speed automatic transmission. Shifts quickly once you get moving.
And on the move, that’s where the 3 shines brighter against the Impreza. The Mazda beats the Subaru in lateral acceleration and the figure-eight track test, although it lags behind the Civic. This fits with our general impression of the three as drivers’ cars, with the Civic being the sportiest and the Impreza competent but not particularly fun to drive.
There’s definitely fun to be had behind the wheel in the 3; In a vehicle with moderate power, it’s important to maintain speed when navigating favorite back roads, and precise, linear steering goes a long way in doing so. The body is also well controlled, with enough roll to provide a sense of inertia without ever feeling sloppy or awkward, and the brake pedal is easy to modulate and offers adequate stopping power. Unfortunately, our test car wore relatively narrow 215-wide tires which limit how sharply you can go around corners (and perhaps its handling on the test track), and you can tell the Mazda uses torsion beam rear suspension because of the damped shocks. the cause, through large hole protrusions and expansion joints.

The Mazda 3 AWD may be more fun to drive than the Impreza, but it loses the fuel economy battle. The interior space is another area where the 3 lines are. Likewise with the smooth leather upholstery on the seats, steering wheel and gear lever. On the 2023 Carbon hatch, a power driver’s seat and heated front seats are standard, and all outboard front and rear seats are equally comfortable.
In fact, the Carbon Edition is quite loaded. It gets automatic LED headlights as standard, large 18-inch wheels, keyless entry, sunroof, push-button start and compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This compares favorably with the Impreza, which only offers an optional sunroof and completely lacks the rain-sensing wipers and electronic parking brake that the Mazda has.

An excellent 12-speaker Bose premium sound system is standard on the 3 Carbon, offering more speakers than any Impreza. The Mazda also gets an 8.8-inch center screen, which is larger than the Impreza’s maximum screen size of 8.0 inches – although the unit in the Mazda isn’t a touchscreen like most of its rivals. Instead, it’s controlled by knobs and buttons on the center console; these settings become easier to use with more familiarity, although not as intuitive or simple as a touch screen. Lastly, the 2023 Carbon 3 also includes automatic high beams, a lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic monitoring.

The Civic is the most interesting competitor, at least for those who don’t think FWD is a deal breaker. It rides better and has almost everything the Mazda has and then some, like a wireless charging pad and a slightly larger center screen. The Mazda 3 Carbon AWD is perfect for someone who doesn’t care about power or acceleration, as it gives you most of the benefits and quality feel of a top-end 3 in an equally smooth and comfortable package. There are more practical, faster, more efficient and cheaper mainstream small cars out there, but few can match its special blend of driving pleasure and luxury. Heck, we’re not even sure Audi and BMW do. The Mazda3 will get new packages, including a Carbon Turbo edition, better connected technology, and an enhanced suite of standard safety features.
