The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is a three-row mid-size SUV and currently tops the recently launched Mazda CX-50 as the largest SUV in the automaker’s lineup. An all-new three-row SUV called the CX-90 is coming, which may mean the CX-9’s days are numbered. But at least for 2023, the CX-9 is still in the mix.

Our test car’s climate control was easy to use, but with polar bear blood coursing through your veins, it might not keep you cool enough. The heated and ventilated front seats work well, and rear seat passengers enjoy local climate control.

What about the interior? The interior of the Mazda CX-9 is carefully designed, simple and elegant, a benchmark for non-luxury SUVs. Basic controls are easy to access and use. The main control dial is intuitive and provides quick navigation in the bright 9-inch infotainment display menu.

Getting in and out of the CX-9 is easy, and access to the third row is improved thanks to new second-row captain’s chairs available on the Signature trim. There is plenty of room in the first and second rows, but the third row is best for children. Due to the CX-9’s thick pillars and small rear window, visibility is not as open as other SUVs.

What about technology? The optional Bose stereo system delivers clear and loud sound. The smartphone is easy to pair and quickly recognized upon startup. There are also enough USB ports to charge everyone’s devices (a total of 6 on the top trim). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are standard.

Every CX-9 is equipped with advanced safety and driver aids such as adaptive cruise, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning and lane keeping assist. They are used to handling high traffic situations, so false alarms are rare. The navigation and adaptive lane keeping functions work well to ease the traffic load.

What about the store? The CX-9 lags behind the competition in terms of cargo and utility. 14.4 cubic feet behind the third row may be more than enough for many buyers, but for comparison, the Kia Telluride’s best-in-class 21 cubic feet. The car seat is easy to install as a 2-row captain’s chair. There is plenty of room for car seats of all sizes, even the large back seats. If you plan to tow a lot, the CX-9 doesn’t lead the pack in that area, with a maximum weight average of less than 3,500 pounds.

What is fuel economy? The all-wheel drive CX-9 has an EPA fuel economy rating of 23 mpg combined (20 city/26 highway), which is slightly better than average for the class. We were able to hit this fuel economy goal most of the time, but with a heavy foot, it was easy to miss. If cost savings are more important than maximum engine power, the CX-9 can run on regular octane fuel.
