A Bose premium audio system, heated front and rear leather seats, a wide-angle rearview camera, a power liftgate, and a glass moonroof are all standard. The interior design is also stylish. I thought the color head-up display was discreet and convenient. It also integrates well with driver assistance systems. This GT was equipped with the optional (CAD $1,600) Technology Package. This included the usual features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, smart city brakes, and cruise control with stop function. Even more unusual is the lane assist system, which gently guides you back on course if you drift along the white lines. If you decide to let the technology take full control, you’ll be warned to put your hands back on the wheel after about 10 seconds.

Although it’s already in dealerships, the CX-5’s story in North America is just beginning, with the CX-5 expected to finally arrive later this year with the 2.2-liter diesel that Mazda planned to introduce in the previous model. This combination of torque and fuel economy is typical of small European SUVs, and it will be interesting to see how it performs in this market.

Further into the future, the current gasoline engine will be replaced by one of Mazda’s brilliant new non-compression Skyactiv-X engines. This engine is scheduled to debut in 2019 and will rival diesel economy. Driving around town is also easy and refreshing. Acceleration and overtaking on the highway are equally strong. The transmission shifts smoothly.

During a typical week of combined local and highway driving, I averaged 28.7 mpg. The EPA rates it at 23 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

The seats are very comfortable and well reinforced. An 8-way power driver’s seat with power and memory on the Edge is welcome. The Premium Package includes 6-passenger seating. The heated steering wheel is great, but I would like to see the entire rim heated in the future. The front door armrest narrows at the edge of the door and is exactly where your elbow rests. It should be as wide as there. The center console armrest needs more padding.

Rear legroom and comfort are perfect for a 6-foot tall adult sitting behind his 6-foot driver. The rear seats are also heated as part of the Premium Package.
