The 2013 CX-5 isn’t Mazda’s first compact crossover SUV, but it might as well be. Mazda’s previous attempts to enter the highly competitive segment included the Tribute (a Ford Escape clone) and the highly regarded but slow-selling Mazda CX-7. With this all-new, athletically oriented and generously equipped compact SUV, Mazda finally got the recipe right.
Starting with an all-new unibody, Mazda’s engineers decided to combine a relatively spacious interior, sharp driving dynamics and a lightweight overall package. The 2013 Mazda CX-5 will initially be offered with a frugal engine, a sophisticated 2.0-liter four-cylinder with direct fuel injection that produces 155 horsepower and 150 Nft of torque. Combined with front-wheel drive, EPA-estimated fuel economy of 29 miles per gallon puts the CX-5 at the top of its class in terms of performance.
Choosing a vehicle in the compact SUV segment sometimes means settling for less when it comes to advanced equipment. That is not the case with the CX-5. Even in the basic version, the impressive list of standard equipment will satisfy budget users. The ascent will naturally result in a more extensive equipment list, with the range-topping Grand Touring primarily equipped as a luxury model.
In terms of storage and cargo capacity, the CX-5 is on par with its competitors. The base CX-5 Sport has 60/40 split rear seats, and for those who like to ski and snowboard with four, the Touring and Grand Touring models have an exclusive 40/20/40 split rear seat. . For storing long objects in the boot. Maximum cargo capacity isn’t class-leading, but it’s not far off.

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is a traditional concept, but it still offers attractive styling and driving dynamics, excellent fuel economy and advanced equipment. There are plenty of good choices this year, but we think the CX-5 offers a great combination that can’t be found anywhere else at this price point. Those considering the next-generation Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4 will benefit from putting the all-new Mazda CX-5 on their shortlist.
Power for every 2013 Mazda CX-5 comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive models can be paired with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel drive is available on all trim levels, but must be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Mazda estimates that with all-wheel drive, the CX-5 will go from zero to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds, which should be a competitive time for a four-cylinder small crossover. Official EPA numbers haven’t been released yet, but Mazda says in the manual that the CX-5 will achieve excellent fuel economy at 26 mpg city/33 mpg highway. With all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, those numbers drop to 25 mpg city/30 mpg highway.
Standard safety features for the CX-5 include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. A blind spot warning system is available as an option.

In braking tests, the CX-5 Grand Touring stopped in 121 feet from 60 mph, slightly better than the class average.
In crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the CX-5 earned the highest possible rating of “Good” in frontal offset, side and roof strength tests.
The 2013 Mazda CX-5’s driving style is a dynamic departure from the compact SUV segment’s usual low standards. The brakes, suspension and steering are unusually powerful, but overall the CX-5 is pure fun and confidence to drive around a twisty road. On the open highway, the CX-5 isn’t the quietest choice, but it’s still a comfortable ride.
While the CX-5’s engine specs won’t blow you away on paper, there’s plenty of power for real-world driving. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly and is well-matched to the engine. It’s also refreshing to report that the six-speed manual transmission available on the front-drive CX-5 is truly rewarding to drive.
Mazda Cx 5 Review
Regardless of equipment level, the CX-5 cockpit is attractive, modern and functional. It’s a solid design (some might be understated), but at least it’s not surrounded by poorly rendered fake wood or highly reflective chrome trim. Limited use of satin-finish metal detailing emphasizes soft surfaces, and black gauges with white lettering are easy to read. The optional navigation system is satisfactory, but many current smartphone navigation/map apps are faster and more intuitive.
The driving position and comfort on the front seats are quite good. The rear seats are spacious for this category (especially in terms of legroom) and although it’s a bit flat to sit on, it has an innovative folding mechanism that lowers the seat base before folding to give an almost flat boat floor. . With all seats occupied, the boot is 34 cubic metres, which expands to a competitive 65 cubic meters with the rear seats folded down.
The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is available in one body style and three trim levels: Base Sport, Mid-range Touring and top-of-the-line Grand Touring.

Wrote on the forum a week ago about the purchase. After 1 week I am in love. Excellent interior, very comfortable seats, handling is very positive. Everything at your fingertips. The sound system is fantastic. I haven’t checked the gas mileage yet, but it looks good. It has that “heavy feel” in the front that makes you feel more in touch with the road while driving. Lots of power when you merge into traffic. Quiet… inside, although there is some road noise from the tires. Overall, it has a hand down on the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav 4. A ride coming up in a month or so will be a real sensation by then. A perfect vehicle for reflection.
My highway gas mileage is reported to be around 35 MPG. I have over 5,000 miles on the car and have taken several long trips but have yet to reach 31 MPG. Does anyone else get the same?
The Cx-5 is a very fun car to drive. At 28000 miles I started having electrical problems. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY FIXED IT WHICH CAUSED THE PROBLEM. They don’t explain the problem, but it happened. I have now driven 39,000 km on my Mazda CX-5. It is reliable and easy to maintain. Although the electrical issues were pretty bad, since they got them fixed the car has been great. I had all four tires replaced and serviced at 36,000 km. Without problems. At first I leased my Mazda, but when it performed so well I bought it. At first I said I wouldn’t buy another Mazda CX-5 because of the electrical issues, but since many of the electrical issues have been fixed, the car runs great, so I bought it. I will probably buy another CX-5, especially since they have a new model this year, 2017. If you have electrical issues or anything minor (look it up online), take it in and get it fixed right away. Mazda is not talking about this electrical issue, but dealers know how to fix it. Nice car and nice used car.
